MAKING THOSE RESOLUTIONS FOR 2021 STICK AROUND So Long, 2020!
While I would love to say that we went out with a bang in 2020, we really went out with more of a lurch or a groan. It was a rough year for almost everyone, and honestly, I’m happy to have made it out with my sanity. But a new year is upon us — a clean slate — after 2020 made us wiser and stronger. While it doesn’t seem like we could ever have another year as chaotic and uncertain as 2020 turned out to be, I understand feeling a little hesitant to start making resolutions for 2021. After all, what if something else happens that prevents you from accomplishing your goals this year? It’s a valid point, but to be fair, most people (roughly 80%), including maybe you reading this, give up on their resolutions before January is over. Since the pandemic didn’t really hit us in earnest until March of last year, it probably wasn’t the culprit behind your failing to keep New Year’s resolutions. Nevertheless, should some other disaster befall us in this upcoming year — though I sincerely hope that doesn’t happen — there are ways to ensure that you actually keep your resolutions. One of the best pieces of advice for making resolutions that you actually keep is to start small. Make small incremental changes to your diet, to your exercise regimen, or to
other parts of your daily routine. When you start the year, you always have these grandiose ideas for where you want to be by the end of it, and the plans you have for doing it are usually equally grandiose and unattainable. Take dieting, for example. Dieting is all the rage in January, as everyone rushes to find the quick fix or the secret solution to their eating problems. However, the unfortunate fact is that diets fail far more than they succeed. That’s because most people take drastic measures, like quitting sugar cold turkey, or starting a ketogenic diet after a month of scarfing down Christmas cookies. Those habits are too drastic and not sustainable in the long term. Instead, make small changes you can maintain for the rest of the year — and potentially for the rest of your life. If it’s your goal to eat healthier this year, I would recommend reading Dr. Joel Fuhrman’s “The End of Dieting.” I’ve recommended it before, but it’s worth recommending again.
your goals. When you let people who love and respect you in on the goals you have for yourself, you’ll be more motivated. Similarly, remember to encourage the people in your community just as they hopefully encourage you. When you and everyone around you are focused on pushing each other forward, it’s a lot harder to just stop and quit. Whatever New Year’s resolutions you’re striving for this year, you know that you have my support and encouragement. And if part of that resolution is improving your smile or your oral health, you know whom to call!
Another important step toward maintaining your New Year’s resolutions is accountability.

successful people who will push you and encourage you to achieve

ALL ABOUT THE RESPECT CAMPAIGN AND HOW YOU CAN HELP US HELP YOUR COMMUNITY!
I’ve been a lot of things in my life: a teacher, a speaker, an author, a community leader, a humanitarian, and an orthodontist. But every role I’ve taken on, I’ve tried to serve the needs of my community, and that’s led me to the latest project I want you to know about: the RESPECT campaign. Not too long ago, I surveyed several of my patients to understand what some of their most pressing needs were during these uncertain times brought on by the pandemic. Their No. 1 answer was that they needed their children to learn to treat others with respect. And so, the idea behind the RESPECT campaign was born. While I won’t be the one leading the campaign, I will be financially backing it — and I’m very excited about what I believe it can become. Without getting too much into the details, the message and goal of the RESPECT campaign will be to teach and inspire creativity in children, to help them see the world as it could/should be. We want to promote health and wellness to children, especially
in the context of a world ravaged by a pandemic. So, at RESPECT campaign events, we will have games and contests that promote treating others in a healthy, respectful
manner. We’ll help them understand why they should wash their hands, eat healthy foods, exercise, social distance, wear a face mask and just generally be considerate of other people around them. While we don’t have any dates for these events quite yet, we want you to know that we want your help. If you think helping the RESPECT campaign also helps our community, then don’t hesitate to reach out to Outflow@AlborziSmiles.com. You could be one of the judges in the face mask contest, hand out prizes, or even just share different health and wellness tips related to RESPECT with the children. Let us know if you want to help!

Brush your teeth each time you reinsert your aligners. One of the best parts about choosing Invisalign braces is that you can take them in and out when you eat — and you can eat whatever you want! However, you should always remember to brush your teeth before reinserting the aligners. Forgetting to do so might trap food particles and cause bacteria to damage your teeth, or at least stain your aligners. So, while it may seem like a waste of time, it can mean a better smile for the rest of your life.
