A Memory of Kris:
Halloween always brings back this memory. Kris was in first grade, and Halloween was approaching. When I asked him what he wanted to be, his response was, “A dinosaur!” Okay, we’ll figure something out. I never liked store-bought costumes, so off I went to the fabric store in search of a pattern, fabric, and whatever else would be needed to change Kris into a dinosaur. I found the perfect pattern along with material that would work well. I was working - teaching full time - so my sewing time was relegated to the evenings. The big day was almost upon us, and Kris was growing a little worried about being able to be the dinosaur he’d envisioned. Not to worry! The costume was completed in the nick of time. Kris was thrilled with the outcome, and so were Don and I. On Halloween night there was a neighborhood party for the kids before they all went trick or treating. We didn’t know there would be a costume contest, and that added to our surprise when Kris won the small stuffed black cat prize. Then he and Don went off to gather candy while I stayed home to pass out the sweet treats. Kris and Don were gone for quite a while. I just assumed they visited other neighborhoods. Well, they did. Sometime around 9:00 they came in, only one of them was walking. Don was carrying Kris who was asleep. I asked how the evening went. Don smiled and told me, “The dinosaur’s feet got tired.”
