The choristers, staff and Board of Capella Regalis would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the parishioners of the former Saint Augustine’s at Jollimore Church and Rev. Marian Conrad, for the major bequest that parish announced last spring to Capella Regalis to support our youth choirs. We are deeply honoured to receive such a gift. It will help to ensure the vitality of Capella Regalis youth programs for years to come.

5

Dear Friends,

For some time, Nick and Vanessa and the Capella Regalis team have been hoping to offer a concert as a gift to the HRM, free-of-charge to all. Their thinking was that to truly be a gift to the community, worthy of this exceptional place, the concert had to be world-class. Well, the Fauré Requiem, performed with superb orchestra, baritone Alexander Dobson, The Choir of All Saints Cathedral, and the boys, girls, and men of Capella Regalis, fits this criterion. The concert you are about to hear would be right at home in any cultural capital of the world. Thanks to the John C. Kerr Family Foundation and Edmonds Landscape and Construction Services Limited, our primary concert donors, the considerable expenses of this event have been underwritten so that money should not present a barrier to anyone wishing to attend. Like this concert, the Capella Regalis program, established in 2010, is offered free-of-charge to any young person who can commit to the schedule and has a willingness to engage in an education of the highest quality. Whenever I encounter the latest thinking on education, I realize that Capella Regalis ticks all the boxes espoused by these experts. In recent articles that draw conclusions as to why certain countries place so well on PISA tests (Programme for International Student Assessment), it has been suggested that students do better when they have a teacher who stays with them over a period of years. Nick has educated some of the Capella Regalis boys, now adults, for as many as thirteen years ; several of these former choristers are singing in the Young Men and Men’s sectio ns at today’s concert. The same will be the case with Vanessa when her recently formed girls choir matures. The core of the Capella Regalis education is discipline, focus, reliability, listening skills, analytic skills, civility, and teamwork. All these traits and values must be instilled in each member, simply to rehearse properly and sing an Evensong, much less present a concert such as the Fauré Requiem. And, speaking of teamwork, there's an aspect of the Men & Boys program that bears mentioning. Can you think of a sports team where the members range in age from 8 to 58, and the youngest are just as critical to the team as the oldest? In a men & boys choir, only the young ones can sing those soaring soprano lines. The men in the choir can no longer do that, but the boys can, and they relish making that unique contribution – at least until they can’t – and then they move to the men’s section and keep right on singing. Today ’s concert is bookended by two popular hymns for the commemoration of All Saints. These hymns call for all voices, trained and untrained, to join in with great enthusiasm, reminding us with words so appropriate to this occasion and this community: O blest communion, fellowship divine! / We feebly struggle, they in glory shine; Yet all are one in thee, for all are thine. / Alleluia, alleluia! Thank you all for coming today. Let’s hope “For All the City” becomes an annual event. ~ Paul Halley

Justorum Animae Justorum animae in manu Dei sunt, et non tanget illos tormentum mortis. Visi sunt oculis insipientium mori, illi autem sunt in pace.

The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and there no torment shall touch them. In the sight of the unwise they seemed to die: but they are in peace.

Give Us the Wings of Faith Give us the wings of faith to rise Within the veil, and see The saints above, how great their joys, How bright their glories be. We ask them whence their victory came: They, with one united breath, Ascribe the conquest to the Lamb, Their triumph to his death. They marked the footsteps that he trod, His zeal inspired their breast; And following their incarnate God, They reached the promised rest.

Lord, Thou Hast Been Our Refuge Solo Quartet: Meghan Recker, Vanessa Halley, Jamie Whitley & Shaylan Burkhart

O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home.

Lord, thou hast been our refuge from one generation to another.

Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever the earth and the world were made, thou art God from everlasting, and world without end. Thou turnest man to destruction;

again thou sayest, Come again, ye children of men; For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday, seeing that is past as a watch in the night. As soon as thou scatterest them they are even as a sleep and fade away suddenly like the grass. In the morning it is green, and groweth up, but in the evening it is cut down, dried up, and withered. For we consume away in thy displeasure, and are afraid at thy wrathful indignation. For when thou art angry all our days are gone; we bring our years to an end as a tale that is told. The years of our age are threescore years and ten, and though men be so strong that they come to fourscore years, yet is their strength but labour and sorrow, so passeth it away, and we are gone. Turn thee again, O Lord, at the last. Be gracious unto thy servants. O satisfy us with thy mercy, and that soon. So shall we rejoice and be glad all the days of our life. Lord, thou hast been our refuge from one generation to another.

Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever the earth and the world were made,

thou art God from everlasting, and world without end. And the glorious majesty of the Lord our God be upon us. Prosper thou the work of our hands, O prosper thou our handywork.

Words: Psalm 90 & I. Watts (1674 — 1748)

Music: R. Vaughan Williams (1872 — 1958) & W. Croft (1678 — 1727)

R EQUIEM BY G ABRIEL F AURÉ (1845 — 1924)

Baritone soloist: Alexander Dobson

INTROITUS & KYRIE Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis. Te decet hymnus, Deus, in Sion, et tibi reddetur votum in Jerusalem.

Rest eternal grant them, O Lord, and may light perpetual shine on them. A hymn is fitting for you, God, in Zion, and a vow will be paid to you in Jerusalem. Hear my prayer; to you all flesh will come.

Exaudi orationem meam; ad te omnis caro veniet.

Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison.

Amen.

O Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory, free the souls of the dead

from the pains of hell, and from the deep pit, from the mouth of the lion,

nor may the abyss swallow them, nor may they fall into darkness. Sacrifices and prayers to you, Lord, we offer: Receive those souls whom today we remember. Make them, Lord, to pass from death to life, which once you promised to Abraham and to his seed. Amen.

SANCTUS Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt coeli et terra Gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis.

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. Full are the heavens and the earth with your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

PIE JESU Pie Jesu Domine, dona eis requiem, dona eis sempiternam requiem. AGNUS DEI & LUX AETERNA Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona eis requiem, sempiternam requiem. Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine: Cum sanctis tuis in aeternum, quia pius es.

Merciful Lord Jesus, grant to them rest; grant to them everlasting rest.

Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, Grant to them rest, everlasting rest. May light eternal shine on them, Lord, with your saints in eternity, for you are merciful. Rest eternal grant to them, Lord, and may perpetual light shine on them. Deliver me, Lord, from eternal death on that terrible day when the heavens will be moved along with the earth, when you will come to judge the world by fire. I am made to tremble, and I am afraid,

until the trial arrives, and the wrath to come: That day, the day of wrath,

of calamity, and misery, that day, the great day and very bitter. Rest eternal grant to them, Lord, and may light perpetual shine on them.

To paradise may the angels lead you: at your arrival may the martyrs receive you, and lead you into the holy city, Jerusalem. May the chorus of angels receive you, and with Lazarus, once a poor man, may you have eternal rest.

HYMN For All The Saints

The audience is invited to stand and sing the first two and last two verses.

All

1 For all the saints, who from their labours rest, Who thee by faith before the world confessed, Thy Name, O Jesus, be for ever blessed. Alleluia, alleluia!

All

2 Thou wast their rock, their fortress, and their might: Thou, Lord, their Captain in the well-fought fight; Thou, in the darkness drear, the one true Light. Alleluia, alleluia! 3 O may thy soldiers, faithful, true, and bold, Fight as the saints who nobly fought of old, And win, with them, the victor’s crown of gold. Alleluia, alleluia! 4 O blest communion, fellowship divine! We feebly struggle, they in glory shine; Yet all are one in thee, for all are thine. Alleluia, alleluia! 5 And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long, Steals on the ear the distant triumph song, And hearts are brave again, and arms are strong. Alleluia, alleluia! 6 The golden evening brightens in the west; Soon, soon to faithful warriors cometh rest; Sweet is the calm of paradise the blest. Alleluia, alleluia! 7 But lo! there breaks a yet more glorious day; The saints triumphant rise in bright array; The King of glory passes on his way. Alleluia, alleluia! 8 From earth’s wide bounds, from ocean’s farthest coast, Through gates of pearl, streams in the countless host Singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, alleluia, alleluia!

P ERFORMER B IOGRAPHIES CAPELLA REGALIS is a Canadian charity dedicated to training singers and performing choral music of the highest excellence. Founded in Nova Scotia by director Nick Halley in 2010 to build upon the best aspects of the European tradition of church choirs and to revitalize this method of music training in Canada, Capella Regalis now comprises a Boys Choir, Girls Choir, and professional Men's Choir (including Young Men with recently changed voices). Capella Regalis children’s choirs are free and open to any child who passes a basic audition. Capella Regalis Choirs regularly sing Choral Evensong in the Cathedral Church of All Saints, Halifax, as part of the Cathedral's Sundays at Four series. The choirs also perform concerts around Nova Scotia and beyond in a busy September – June season, and engage the public in many music outreach initiatives. Annual performances include tour programs of sacred and secular repertoire from across the Western tradition, and the popular, annual Christmas series, A Chorister's Christmas . In addition, each season Capella Regalis collaborates with other groups and world-class musicians in productions of major works such as J.S. Bach’s Easter Cantata BWV 4 , J.S. Bach's Saint Matthew Passion, Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms , Bizet’s Carmen, Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols , Britten’s Saint Nicolas, Fauré ’ s Requiem , Handel’s Te Deum , Monteverdi’s Selva Morale e Spirituale, Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 , Orff’s Carmina Burana, the Paul Winter Consort’s Missa Gaia/Earth Mass , Rutter ’ s Visions , and Schütz's Musikalische Exequien. Capella Regalis has hosted other choirs and performing artists from the local community as well as from across Canada for special projects, and has completed seven performance tours in the Maritimes presented by Musique Royale. Capella Regalis has released three CDs: Love Came Down: Carols for Christmas (2019), Greater Love (2017) and My Eyes for Beauty Pine (2014), as well as many online performance broadcasts. Our philosophy: Access to excellence. In the performing arts world, a major barrier to participation is cost. At Capella Regalis, we are passionate about making professional-level choral music available to everyone because we know music has the power to transform the life of a person, whether that person is a child finding their voice or a listener finding beauty in a soul-stirring performance. We are committed to maintaining a level of excellence in choral music because we believe it is essential to the preservation and development of our cultural heritage. • Our free Probationers Program introduces children as young as six years old to the basics of music literacy and the joy of singing.

15

• Our free Boys Choir and Girls Choir advance the musical and social growth of choristers through a disciplined approach to music studies. The result of this training for the children is access to some of the greatest music humankind has produced over the last 1,000 years, including new repertoire that responds to and expands that heritage. • Our free Young Men’s Program gives teenage boys with changing voices a pre-professional music training with an emphasis on leadership skills that help them navigate the challenging journey to adulthood. Many of our Young Men go on to become paid singers in our Men's Choir. • Capella Regalis supports the artistic practice of professional musicians living and working in Nova Scotia and across Canada. Our Men’s Choir employs a roster of professional adult singers to provide the alto, tenor, and bass voices for Capella Regalis performances, forming the backbone of our annual season of professional presentations, together with instrumentalists and other collaborating artists. The two goals of musical excellence AND accessibility for everyone inform all Capella Regalis programming decisions. Capella Regalis regularly offers free or pay-what-you-can live and online performances for the public, and shares a diverse range of musical repertoire with schoolchildren through free, interactive performances in local elementary schools. Capella Regalis is currently developing a Community Music Literacy Course to teach the basics of music reading through a free online course where anyone may learn at their own pace. For more information about these and other projects, we invite you to visit capellaregalis.com. The CHOIR OF THE CATHEDRAL CHURCH OF ALL SAINTS is directed by Grammy Award-winning composer, choral conductor, and organist Paul Halley. The choir comprises professional singers and choral scholars. The choir sings at the 11:00 AM Choral Eucharist most Sundays, September through June, and also offers services of Evensong, Lessons & Carols, and Readings & Music, as well as concert performances. For more information, visit cathedralchurchofallsaints.com. British-Canadian baritone ALEXANDER DOBSON has been praised for his musical and dramatic artistry on both opera and concert stages.
