In 1559, after the death of her second husband, Barnabas Smith, my mother, decided that I must return to Woolsthorpe to begin learning the ways of a respected landowner to manage her large estate. To an illiterate woman, land was the only thing that mattered to my mother which she now owned and cared for totally by herself.
