medium or large bureau. Many accountancy and legal firms also offer outsourced payroll services to employers who don’t wish to do their own. If you want to work in-house, thousands of businesses in the private sector as well as the public sector across the UK have their own internal payroll departments, and the opportunities for career progression exist in the vast majority of these. Some large accountancy and professional and representative bodies also have in-house tax and payroll policy departments, and if you were born to teach, payroll lecturing is another option. In short, payroll is a vast industry which offers many ways for payroll professionals to move around. If you have a thirst for knowledge and you consider that you’re in a role which influences the way in which UK people earn a living – that’s got to be something to be proud of – especially when you’re a member of a diverse, vital and influential body like the CIPP. And that’s why I feel passionate about payroll. Q: What is your proudest achievement? As an eternal optimist, I see every day as an opportunity to find something (however

small) to feel blessed about, even if it’s just a nice flower in my garden to help brighten up an otherwise dull or stressful day. It also makes me think I can fit more into a day than I really can … Oh well! I was always taught that pride comes before a fall and I’m not naturally a proud or particularly boastful person, but that doesn’t stop me from having strong values and opinions on most matters. I generally find humility brings me greater personal reward. However, if I was to speak of a proud moment, it would be when I told my Dad I had just been awarded a distinction in my Master’s Degree. My Dad had Alzheimer’s and yet when I explained this to him, he was overjoyed. He told me how proud he was of me and how much he loved me. His eyes lit up and he regained some of his former self at that moment. That memory will stay with me forever. Q: What’s the area you would most like to influence during your time on the board? I would like to ensure the board is transparent and communicates to members regularly about what happens in that room. It’s not always visible or noticeable, but there’s an awful lot going on in the

background. I consider we’re ultimately accountable to the members and I’d like to see us giving updates on our plans and achievements more often, at the conference and in the magazine – even if it’s just a small piece about a particular issue, rather than in a board report. Q: I’d love to know a bit more about you, so could you tell me what your favourite cuisine is and why? Oh dear – well firstly, I need to confess my all-consuming addiction to cheese. I can’t help myself on that score. But having grown up in Spain and being married to an Italian, there’s a lot of Spanish and Italian cooking going on in our house. I don’t eat meat or poultry, but I do eat fish and shellfish as well as the thousands of other delicious things now available on our shelves. Aren’t we lucky to have that choice? I also adore spicy Thai food. But I’m not answering your question! If I was on a desert island what on earth would I take? Well, all I know is I couldn’t fly there with a budget airline as I would need a big suitcase to fill with all my favourite Spanish, Italian and Thai produce to see me through. n
