Sharing Your Hope for the Future Most people acknowledge that someday, their name will be carved in granite. At the Community Foundation, we have a means of creating a memorial that has far greater lasting impact than a block of stone. Endowment funds are like blocks of granite. They last and last. One way you can extend your influence into the future is by carving your name into an endowment fund at the Community Foundation of Whitley County. Generations from now, local residents will benefit from your foresight and generosity. They will see your name on an endowment and know that you once walked this earth and that you cared about the future enough to support a meaningful cause through the Foundation. You can memorialize a loved one or someone who has strongly impacted your life for good, such as a family member, teacher or trusted friend. A great example is the James E. Thompson Memorial Scholarship created by Vince Turner and his wife Pat. The fund honors the treasured friend and teacher who so greatly influenced Vince’s life. Now each year, Jim Thompson’s name is called and his legacy secured when a student stands up to accept a scholarship. You can also create an endowment in your own name to craft a legacy reflecting the values, causes and beliefs you hold most dear. Endowments can be established with the Community Foundation now, during life. You can use cash, appreciated securities, real estate – almost anything of value. Or you can make arrangements for an endowment to be established at the time of your death through your will. Some people do both. One reason for establishing an endowment now is to have in place a means whereby friends and loved ones can tangibly express their thoughtfulness during bereavement. Being able to give to something permanent that you cared about can mean a lot to them.
