Sharing Our Secret
The Power of Endowed Giving
It’s really no secret – many of the grants and scholarships awarded in 2022 came from gifts made to the Community Foundation many years ago, while other contributions were recent. The secret rests in how donations are managed and invested – they are endowed. When someone makes a gift to an endowment at the Community foundation, their contribution is never spent. EVER. Instead, the gift is prudently invested to produce earnings. A percentage of those earnings are used to fulfill the donor’s intent in the form of grants and scholarships. Through a contractual fund agreement, the Foundation makes distributions based on the donor’s instructions and charitable goals. Typically, a portion of the earnings are set aside to ensure the fund continues to grow over time. As years go by, grants from endowment funds will far exceed their original gift. Best of all, these endowments are designed to last forever, meaning gifts will still be enhancing Whitley County for generations to come. In 2022, the Community Foundation grew to encompass 210 endowed funds.
