The sun is out in St. Paul’s. Lowertown, and Summer has finally arrived. For me, July is for gardening and canning, followed by BBQs in the backyard with family and friends. Minnesota summer absolutely shines with lush green trees, flowers in bloom, and inviting blue lakes. It is the perfect time of year to appreciate the outdoors and consider how we interact with it. In March, TPT launched a new initiative called Minnesota Outdoors , which you can learn more about at tpt.org/minnesotaoutdoors . You will see pieces from this initiative throughout this month’s magazine, starting with the cover. America Outdoors with Baratunde Thurston , which premieres July 5 at 8 p.m. on TPT 2, was produced right here at TPT in conjunction with PBS National Productions. Our team has been hard at work for several years crafting this six-episode series featuring the charismatic host, author, activist, and comedian Baratunde Thurston. You may know him from his New York Times bestselling book How to Be Black or from the podcast How to Citizen with Baratunde . America Outdoors asks: how does our relationship with the outdoors define us, as individuals and as a nation? The show takes viewers far and wide through the United States of America, from Death Valley to Appalachia. The final episode of the season features landscapes and activities familiar to many of us. Our team at TPT had a wonderful time filming with Baratunde and the PBS crew in Minnesota, capturing the beauty and diversity of the North Shore and Boundary Waters. We are so excited about this series that our team is working with PBS Digital Studios to create a companion digital series, America Outdoors: Understory , which will bring more stories of the outdoors with Baratunde to you this fall. I will share launch dates for the digital series as we get closer. In other news, July also offers a sneak peek into the second season of our local music series, STAGE . Catch the first episode on July 22 at 9 p.m. on TPT 2. More to come next month!

TPT Presents a New Minnesota Outdoors Initiative
From the past to the present – and imagining the future – Minnesota's outdoor spaces challenge us in more ways than one. They provide opportunities to dive headlong into physical activity; they provide the backdrop for personal exploration and identity; they are the landscapes of cultural traditions; and they refract and reflect evolving social values. Minnesota Outdoors is a new initiative grounded in our Strategic Plan ( tpt.org/2030 ) that explores Minnesotans’relationship with the outdoors – and the historic and contemporary factors that shape those relationships for different communities. Leveraging multiple media platforms, in-person events, and several engaging content projects, Minnesota Outdoors will help to create new narratives and to reclaim forgotten narratives about the outdoors as a space for all Minnesotans. Encompassing a blend of national and local work, Minnesota Outdoors includes the following TPT productions: AMERICA OUTDOORS The America Outdoors companion digital series (title forthcoming) is a six-part YouTube series inspired by America Outdoors with Baratunde Thurston . The digital series will feature self- recorded footage, virtual interviews, and video diaries, introducing a fresh collection of folks who are wild about being outside. Baratunde digs deep into what makes a person’s relationship with the outdoors unique and how their time outside is impacted by climate change, equity, access, culture, adrenaline and more.
OUTSIDE CHANCE Whether participating or spectating, Minnesota is an endless playground for outdoor activities and traditions. Outside Chance — a web series featuring new and traditional outdoor activities – highlights Minnesota’s outdoor culture and is hosted by yogi, emcee, rapper, and outdoor enthusiast Chance York. SCIGIRLS A new season of the TPT-produced, national series SciGirls will concentrate on exploring our nation’s great national parks and how science intertwines with the outdoors.The seventh season of the acclaimed series will follow real girls as they conduct citizen science in tandem with forest rangers in national parks.

An Active Retirement on the Appalachian Trail By Susan Schaefer
2,190 miles of the Appalachian Trail (AT) offered him an "epic quest," that included "physical and mental challenges, use of wits, sustainable over enough time to test my commitment and bring out both my best and worst," he says. Fetig began volunteering with the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (PATC) in 2012, in part to prepare for that through hike, which he accomplished in 2014. “If this experience has taught me anything, it's the importance of finding a direction and focus in retirement. If you can do that, you'll never be bored.” Overseeing a trail section in Shenandoah National Park, Fetig now works with a PATC trail crew, helps with fundraising, and occasionally volunteers at the ATC visitor center, giving presentations and leading workshops on hiking. Working on the trail helps Fetig appreciate the complexities of managing it, describing it as "a system with many parts that all need to work together." Volunteers are one of those parts, and he says there is a role for everyone. "If this experience has taught me anything, it's the importance of finding a direction and focus in retirement about which you are passionate," he says."If you can do that, you'll never be bored."
Jim Fetig approached retirement the same way he approached the rest of his life: eager to test his mettle. As a soldier's son and later an Army officer himself, he has lived in 19 states and three foreign countries, traveled to 50 states and 44 countries, and had 64 permanent mailing addresses. After leaving the Army as a colonel, Fetig held executive communications positions at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Raytheon and Lockheed Martin. He was a visiting fellow at the RAND Corporation and served as a foreign policy spokesman for the Clinton administration and chief of external relations for the Corporation for National and Community Service under President Obama. Despite years of desk jobs, Fetig is an avid outdoor enthusiast. He graduated from the Army's Winter Warfare School in Alaska, was certified as a winter operations instructor by the Minnesota National Guard, has lived on a glacier in Alaska, and skied northern Minnesota's Boundary Waters Canoe Area in mid-winter.

Planning a Visit to Accessible National Parks By Rosie Wolf Williams
Kristin Secor has a love for travel, and regularly visits national parks across the country. But Secor was born with a rare form of muscular dystrophy that affects her muscle strength and mobility. She also has scoliosis and is on a ventilator to assist with her breathing. So, she uses a wheelchair or a mobility scooter when she is away from home. Despite her physical limitations, Secor finds ways to travel and enjoy the outdoors. On her blog, “World on Wheels,” she encourages people with disabilities to travel by offering resources and recounting her own experiences, including her trips to National Parks.
“Using the tracked chair gave me a sense of freedom and independence that I hadn't been able to experience in a long time.” "From that point forward, every time the NPS built a new facility or started a new program, or did a major renovation of an existing facility, the project had to bring the facility up to the current accessibility standards," says Jeremy Buzzell, manager of the National Park Service's Accessibility Support Program. In 1968, Congress passed the Architectural Barriers Act, which requires federal entities to make their facilities accessible. The Rehabilitation Act in 1974 requires them to make their programs and services accessible. "This hike is something that would not have been possible with other mobility equipment due to the inclines, tree roots and rocks," she says. "Using the tracked chair gave me a sense of freedom and independence that I hadn't been able to experience in a long time." If you are traveling to a specific area of the United States, go to NPS.gov and enter the state in the search box. From there, you can see a list of all the National Parks in that state. Each park has a drop- down menu under the Plan Your Visit category that includes the section labeled Accessibility. "The website will give you an idea on the accessibility for each place, accessible lodging options within the park, and more," says Secor.
When she visited Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore in Northern Michigan, a free local program allowed her to use an all-terrain chair with bulldozer- like tracks to go on a two-mile hike through the woods and up a hill so she could enjoy views of Lake Michigan.

We realized how much we missed and valued the public media we had at home. Together since 2011, rapper Mona Haydar and her husband Sebastian Robins gained international attention for their “Ask a Muslim” project in 2015 in the wake of the Paris and San Bernardino extremist attacks. Mona, a Muslim, is Syrian American, and Sebastian converted to Islam after meeting Mona. Their new three-part PBS series, The Great Muslim American Road Trip , follows the millennial Muslim American couple on a cross-country journey along historic Route 66 as they explore Islam’s deep roots in America. Making stops between Chicago and Los Angeles, the couple meets with authors, entrepreneurs, medical students, performers, and others to better understand the centuries-long Muslim experience in the United States. The series seeks to highlight the diversity of Muslims across the nation and their contributions to history and culture, weaving a colorful story of what it means to be a Muslim in America today.
