Scott Naismith | Duality | May 2024

INTRODUCTION May 2024

We are delighted to introduce our eleventh solo show of Scott Naismith’s paintings. This exhibition is called Duality and it marks Scott’s continued and deepening interest in developing his work in a more abstract direction, portraying visual reality but also his experience of philosophical, emotional and spiritual realities. Over the years Scott’s work has developed from a more straightforward and representational approach to landscape painting in which the rugged coastlines and beautiful sunsets of Scotland have been shared with viewers on the canvas, to his more abstract approach now. He takes elements expressed by nature - such as the light - and filters them through philosophical concepts to create a new visual representation of landscape. For Scott, reality in its simplest form can be understood as duality. It is nature’s ongoing dance between opposing forces that inspires him to paint, and he takes these opposing forces, simplifying and embellishing them to form a new visual language. Within this new body of work Scott has explored the opposition between dynamism and tranquility, expressing it visually through the contrast between muted and saturated colour. And of course running through all of Scott’s work is a sense of fundamental hope and optimism, of light emerging through darkness.
