BLUNT DEPTH GAUGE CAUSES ROUGH CUTTING
UNEVEN DEPTH GAUGE HEIGHT. CHAIN WON’T CUT STRAIGHT.
Cause : Uneven filing Solution : Use correct depth gauge jointer to lower gauges evenly
Cause : Improperly filed depth gauge Solution : Round off front corner to maintain original shape
BOTTOMS OF TIE-STRAPS AND CUTTERS WORN OUT OF SQUARE.
TIE-STRAPS OR CUTTERS, BROKEN IN THE CENTER
Cause : Incorrect field assembly of saw chain components. Solution : Replace broken components.
Cause : Worn guide bar rails. Solution : Dress the tops of the guide bar’s rails square. If wear is minor, file the bottoms of tie-straps and cutters square. If wear is extensive, replace the saw chain.

DAMAGE TO CUTTERS ON ONE SIDE OF SAW CHAIN
Symptoms : Guide bar and saw chain bind in the cut. Could result in guide bar and saw chain breakage when removing the guide bar from tree. Uneven guide bar rail wear.
Cause : Cutters on one side of saw chain are damaged by hitting the saw box or ground/debris.
Solution : File cutters back enough to remove all damage. Square up guide bar rails if uneven.
DIFFERENT CUTTER TOP-PLATE LENGTHS
Symptoms : Guide bar and saw chain bind in the cut. Could result in guide bar and saw chain breakage when removing the guide bar from tree. Uneven guide bar rail wear.
Cause : Inconsistent sharpening. Solution : File cutters back to even cutter top-plate lengths. Square up guide bar rails if uneven.
