GUIDE BAR RAIL CONDITIONS

1. CHIPPED RAIL Symptoms : Material chipping out of one or both rails behind the hard tip. Cause : Chipping of rails behind hard tip. Continual pressure of bar on one area. Dull chain. Loose bar tension. Remedy : Flip bar to reduce wear. Replace bar. (This chipping can cause chain damage)

4. WIRE EDGE BAR RAIL Symptoms : Rail edges may chip if wire edge is not removed. Cause : Normal wear caused by pressure of chain on edges of bar rails. Remedy : Use a flat file on edge of bar rail to remove wire edge.

2. THIN RAIL AND LOW RAIL Symptoms : Thin rail on one or both sides of bar. Rail could be blue color in thin area. Cause : Chain leaning over, cutting crooked. Forcing dull chain to cut. Damage to cutters on one side of chain. Remedy : Bar cannot be repaired if rail is thin and uneven. Replace

5. SPREAD RAILS (HARVESTER)

Symptoms : Guide bar will not enter log during cut or cannot make complete cut. Cause : Saw chain was struck broadside or pushed sideways. Remedy : 1. Hammer rails together with drive link in groove as spacer. Adjust saw return to allow guide bar to go further into saw box. Sharpen delimbing knives. Avoid moving tree/log when guide bar and saw chain are out of saw box. 2. Reduce guide bar feed speed.

3. WORN BAR RAILS Symptoms : Shallow groove. Cause : Worn bar rails are normal for a bar that has been in service for a period of time. Remedy : Replace bar.
