ARU Director of Estates and Facilities - Candidate Brochure

Discover Estates & Facilities

What we do ARU operates across multiple locations: our two key campuses of Cambridge and Chelmsford, ARU London, our presence in the capital and our university centre in Peterborough. These locations house a diversity of spaces, including teaching and learning environments, research facilities, cafes and restaurants, gyms and student residences. The Estates & Facilities team employs more than 150 people with a broad range of expertise and skills, operating and maintaining facilities and providing services to ensure ARU continues to innovate, educate and engage widely. Estates & Facilities plays a critical role in supporting ARU’s ambitions. We support the student experience through the provision and development of student residences and recreational facilities. Some of our most important contributions to enabling the university’s vision are reflected in our recent achievements: The Science Centre at Cambridge and the Medical School at Chelmsford. In addition to major infrastructure development, E&F continually makes significant investment developing and refurbishing its existing estate and undertakes a rolling programme of improvements to the estate to support learning, teaching and social spaces.

E&F is responsible for space management across the university, delivering detailed facilities and timetabling services. Further strengthening this service will be required to deliver on our ambitions to consolidate and provide a forward look on the student timetable as a key service to our students. The university is also a landlord, owning and operating property. Estates & Facilities uses its expertise to maximise the benefit of its estate, creating revenue streams which generate income to reinvest into the wider university. To support our ambitions to 2026 and beyond, ARU has to maximise the benefit of its estate and identify commercial opportunities to generate revenue to plough back into the estate for students and staff. The university owns property that must be optimised, ensuring transparency of existing use of the estate and developing robust mechanisms to ensure appropriate capacity whilst identifying opportunities for commercial and community benefit to further the aims of the institution. We take seriously our responsibility to make the best use of the university’s financial, infrastructure and people through forward planning, innovation and investing in our people and services. We seek to be the centre of knowledge for Estates & Facilities expertise. Sustainability in all its forms is at the heart of this, and we have a dedicated team of professionals to advise and implement sustainable solutions throughout our estate and services.
