Nottingham Business School became the 129th institution worldwide to gain coveted triple-crown status when it achieved AMBA accreditation earlier this year. Tim Banerjee Dhoul charts the school’s roots as part of a university dating back to 1843 and outlines its programme portfolio’s emphasis on applied learning
HISTORY First established in 1979, Nottingham Business School (NBS) is one of eight academic schools at Nottingham Trent University (NTU). In the 45 years since its foundation, the NBS alumni network has grown to encompass more than 30,000 people across 140 countries. NTU, meanwhile, is one of the UK’s largest institutions by student body. According to figures from the Higher Education Statistics Agency, it enrolled more than 40,000 students in 2021/22 – the country’s sixth-largest number in that academic year. The university traces its roots back to the formation of the Nottingham Government School of Design in 1843. It became Trent Polytechnic in 1971, before being chartered as Nottingham Trent University in 1992.

The flagship full-time MBA at NBS can be completed in one year, or two for those opting to undertake a placement. Experiential learning is a focus and the
NBS is based at NTU’s City Campus in the heart of Nottingham, the second-largest urban area (after Birmingham) in the Midlands region of England. It is housed in one of Nottingham’s tallest edifices, the 1950s art-deco style Newton building that was recently upgraded as part of a £90 million investment project. Described by the university as “compact, friendly and well-located”, the city has a student population of more than 60,000 and placed just outside the top 50 in the QS Best Student Cities 2025 report, between Santiago, Chile and Milan, Italy.
programme features three hands‑on consultancy projects, one of which takes place outside the UK. Also on offer is a part-time executive MBA and an online EMBA run in conjunction with two fellow AMBA-accredited institutions: South Africa’s Stellenbosch University and Insper in Brazil. In addition, the school has a doctoral programme and an extensive range of full-time master’s degrees, including an MSc in management with a choice of different specialisations.
