“Serving The Industry For More Than Fifty Years”
Republic Service Recognized By NWRA by Greg Kishbaugh R epublic Services has been named 2020 Organics Recycler of the Year by the National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA), which honors innovators and leaders in the industry who have made substantial contributions to recycling.
Association Offers Sustainability Movie The Paper and Packaging Board said its new documentary movie casts a positive light on environmental stewardship prac- tices, including the use of recovered fiber, adopted by the North American paper and board industry. The association describes the new doc- umentary “Paper Makers” as “a story of grit, passion and dedication”that“gives an inside look at the United States paper and packaging industry’s decades-long legacy of environmental stewardship.” “For generations, our mill workers and foresters have protected the natural re- sources they’re charged with,” said Mary Anne Hansan, President of the Paper and Packaging Board.“The paper and packag- ing industry’s environmental practices are inherently designed to protect and culti- vate this vital circular system.Telling that story through the eyes of industry work- ers — folks who are truly the vanguards of environmental stewardship — is really important for people to understand.” The film has been designed to reach pack- aging designers, environmental engineers and business leaders with a message of how paper can help them “design the sus- tainable solutions of tomorrow and show consumers why paper can be a sustainable choice for the planet,”says the board.
The industry award recogniz- es Republic’s leadership in di- verting food and yard waste from landfills through food recovery, organics pre-processing and com-
posting — contributing to the circular economy. Food and yard waste currently represent about 30 percent of the munici- pal solid waste that is sent to landfills, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. By diverting this material to organics programs, safe and edible food can be recovered for people or animals to consume, and green waste can be recycled into a nutrient-rich compost for soil or into biogas that can be used as fuel. “Republic’s efforts to process 1.7 billion pounds of yard and food waste into 275,000 tons of compost in 2019 is worthy of this award,” said Darrell Smith, NWRA President and CEO. Republic Services currently operates 11 compost facilities in five states, including California, where there is greater demand due to legislation mandating the diversion of organic waste from landfills. Many of Republic’s composting facilities use mechanical aeration to speed up the biological process and reduce odors. The facility at the Otay Landfill in Chula Vista, California, is an innovative example - it’s

BASF Claims Recycling Breakthrough
The Colors & Effects brand of BASF said it has attained United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) compli- ance to use its Sicopal Black K 0098 FK color additive into food-contact applications. The Ludwigshafen,Germany-based company said the FDA compliance for Sicopal Black, which was launched earlier in 2020, joins its status in earning European Union food contact approval in April. Back In Black BASF said the product’s new FDA compliance “makes it one of the first recyclable black pigments broadly rec- ognized for use in food contact applications. The product thereby expands possibilities for recyclable black plastics materials such as food and cosmetic packaging, which up until now have gone to landfills or incineration.” “Until recently, black plastic packaging was considered unrecyclable due to coloration with carbon black pigment. Even trace amounts of carbon black are undetectable by [scrap] sorting machines, and [can] disrupt the scrap sort- ing process at materials recycling facilities,” said the com- pany. By replacing carbon black with near-infrared- (NIR-) re- flective Sicopal Black, black plastic items can be detected in the sorting process and then recycled, said BASF.

NWRA Urges Congress To Suspend Truck Tax
The National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA) and several of its member companies joined with dozens of oth- er national, state and local organizations and companies on a letter to congressional leaders urging the suspension of the 12 percent Federal Excise Tax (FET) on the purchase of new heavy-duty trucks and trailers through the end of 2021.The FET increases the cost of new trucks and trailers by $22,000 on average. Truck sales in the United States are predicted to decline by 50 percent in 2020 due to the current global health cri- sis. In March, truck orders dropped 52 percent compared to last year. A suspension of the FET would increase sales of trucks and, in turn, save or bring back the livelihoods of almost 8 million Americans employed in jobs related to trucking, according to the NWRA. Meridian Seeks Donations To Stock Food Pantry Meridian Waste Virginia, LLC, a subsidiary of Meridian Waste, an integrated, non-hazardous solid waste services company, has asked for the community’s help to feed those in need through stocking the food pantry at Agape Center in the New River Valley (NRV).The initiative coincides with National Civic Engagement Month and National Prepared- ness Month. 40Yards to Feed the Community is a new proj- ect running from September 15 through November 30 to help fortify the reserves of the local food pantry and feed individuals and families IP Q2 Earnings Drop In Response To Pandemic Memphis, Tennessee-based International Paper’s (IP’s) second-quarter earnings are down compared with the same time period in 2019. According to the company’s earnings report, IP achieved second-quarter net earnings of $266 million compared with $141 million in the first quarter of the year and $292 million in the second quarter of 2019.The company reports that this year’s first-quarter net earnings included an af- ter-tax charge of $337 million for the impairment of the net assets and write-off of foreign currency translation adjust- ment following the announcement of the sale of IP’s Brazil packaging business.

Mack To Start Producing Electric Refuse Trucks
Buyer’s Guide BALERS (HORIZONTAL) * RECYCLING EQUIPMENT CORPORATION * 831 W. 5th St. • Lansdale, PA 19446 (267) 218-7200
Greensboro, North Carolina-based Mack Trucks plans to commercialize its Mack LR Electric refuse model, to be equipped with what it calls a fully electric integrated Mack drivetrain. Orders for the LR Electric will open in the fourth quarter of 2020, with deliveries beginning in 2021. The LR Electric will be manufactured at Mack’s Le- high Valley Operations in Macungie, Pennsylvania, where all heavy-duty Mack trucks built for North Amer- ica are assembled. Mack say its LR Electric“will fulfill the needs of refuse cus- tomers, whether commercial or municipal, seeking a true zero-emissions truck that aligns with their own environ- mental goals and local emissions regulations.” Building From The Prototype Introduced as a prototype in 2018, the LR Electric features an electric powertrain with twin electric motors and four nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) lithium-ion batteries pro- viding vehicle propulsion and power for onboard accesso- ries. A three-mode regenerative braking system takes into account the truck’s increasing load and helps recapture en- ergy from the hundreds of stops refuse trucks make per day, according to Mack. In a nod to its pedigree and its copper-wired electric driveline, LR Electric models will feature a copper Bulldog mounted on the front of each truck. “The LR Electric is paving the way toward widespread acceptance of zero-emissions refuse trucks,” Weissburg re- marks. “As we begin delivering them to customers in the coming year,we remain committed to ensuring these trucks are built to meet the unique needs of the refuse industry.” General Kinematics Celebrates 60th Anniversary General Kinematics (GK) is celebrating its 60th anniversa- ry this month. Albert Musschoot founded General Kinematics in a small storefront in Barrington, Illinois, in 1960 with a box of letter- head, an electric typewriter and a grapefruit crate to use as a desk.As demand for GK vibratory equipment grew, by 1975 GK built a fabrication facility in Crystal Lake, Illinois, which is the company’s headquarters today. Organic Growth In 1998,Albert Musschoot’s son Paul Musschoot took over leadership of the company after his father’s death, leading GK’s growth across multiple new markets and establish- ing manufacturing facilities and offices worldwide.Albert’s grandson,Tom Musschoot, leads the business today. The company’s in-house manufacturing takes place in a 220,000-square-foot fabrication facility and uses the latest material cutting, forming and welding technology. GK also has expanded its global manufacturing footprint to include outsourced fabrication partners in Canada, China, England, Germany, Italy, Japan and Thailand.

On the recycling front, the movie denotes that “fibers are reused multiple times and recycled to make new products” and that “paper is one of the most recycled materials on the planet, at a rate of 66.2 percent per year,” said the Paper and Packaging Board. The film’s makers also portray the paper and packaging industry as planting trees to create roughly twice as much wood as it harvests every year. The Paper and Packaging Board said the movie helps por- tray paper as “at the forefront of environmentally friendly innovation,” and that the paper and board industry stands ready to work “with top brands and corporations across personal care, food and beverage and fashion, making the switch to paper packaging as part of their sustainable busi- ness strategies.” The movie can be viewed at: www.howlifeunfolds. com/paper-makers . APR Applauds California Recycled Content Bill
Buyer’s Guide
The Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) applauds Cal- ifornia Governor Gavin Newsom for signing the United States’ first ever recycled content mandate for plastic bev- erage containers, California Assembly Bill 793. The law re- quires all plastic bottles covered by the state’s container redemption program average at least 15 percent postcon- sumer resin (PCR) starting in 2022. The recycled content mandate increases to 25 percent in 2025 and 50 percent in 2030. As the international trade association representing the plastics recycling industry,APR strongly supports efforts to increase collection and supply of postconsumer recycled plastics to augment and sustain recycled content initiatives. TheAPR was the first plastics related organization to public- ly support mandatory recycled content legislation in 2006. “The passage of this bill is a critical step forward,” stated Steve Alexander, President and CEO of the APR.“Mandated PCR content creates market demand, which in turn mone- tizes the entire waste and recycling management system.” Beverage manufacturers that miss the targets will be sub- ject to penalty fees of 20 cents for each pound of PCR by which they fall short. The money will be deposited into a new“Recycling Enhancement Penalty Account,”and is to be spent on recycling, infrastructure, collection and processing of plastic beverage bottles. “This is clearly a step in the right direction, but this is only the first step,” said Alexander.“We need to look at more minimum PCR requirements for all plastic packaging. APR looks forward to working with consumer brand companies to meet the requirements of this bill as well as their sustain- ability goals.” Containerboard Production On The Rise Containerboard production in the United States in August rose by 0.4 percent compared with August 2019, according to theAmerican Forest & PaperAssociation (AF&PA).Year to date, containerboard output has risen by 4 percent. The containerboard mill operating rate inAugust was 92.1 percent, according to the AF&PA, which represents a 0.4 percent decline from August 2019. The average mill oper- ating rate in 2020, however, is up by 2.7 percentage points year-to-date. AF&P said mill inventories of containerboard at the end of August increased 35,000 short tons from the previous month, and were up 68,000 short tons compared with Au- gust 2019. The organization also has reported that recycled-content boxboard production in the United States in August de- creased 6 percent compared with August 2019.Year-to-date, output of the grade has declined by 2 percent.
