MISSOURI SHOW-ME-SELECT

18 of the bulls in this sale are qualified to be used as natural service sires on heifers enrolled in the Missouri Show-Me-Select Heifer Program, which are those bulls that have a CED of +7 or higher. Bulls that are Show-Me-Select qualified are marked with the Show-Me-Select logo. This program is considered to be the gold standard in Missouri, and many producers follow its high standards when selecting bulls for use on heifers even though the producer is not enrolled in the program. HOWEVER, please understand that the CED EPD only applies to breeding heifers. EVERY BULL in this sale is very safe to use on cows, including for their second calf (breeding first-calf heifers). We would never sell a bull that was not suitable to use on cows. Any bull that is not safe to use on cows should not remain a bull. In fact, using the bulls that are not Show-Me-Select qualified will typically result in a calf that weighs a few more pounds and is stouter and hits the ground running. We definitely recommend calving-ease bulls for use on heifers, but many producers get carried away and insist on the same criteria for cows. Remember, the CED criteria does not apply to cows, and therefore has no bearing on a cow’s ease of calving when mated to any particular bull.
