MY ORTHODONTIC PRACTICE PHILOSOPHY

Regardless of a professional’s field, if they want to be excellent at their job, they likely have a philosophy they strive to abide by. Establishing one’s own philosophy, especially when responsible for patients’ health, is of the utmost importance. Doing so allows an orthodontist, dentist, or doctor to ensure that their treatment approach stays within the parameters of their professional creed. For me, keeping my philosophy at the forefront of my practice serves as a constant “My philosophy consists of two important parts: Treat my patients in a way that ensures the utmost excellent outcomes, and provide treatment in the most comfortable way possible.” reminder of why I chose to enter the orthodontic field in the first place. Essentially, my philosophy consists of two important parts: Treat my patients in a way that ensures the utmost excellent outcomes, and provide treatment in the most comfortable way possible. I’ve always looked for ways to provide the best outcome with a better experience and fewer side effects. One thing I always explain to patients is: If I don’t want a specific orthodontic tool or type of braces in my own mouth, I will not subject my patients to it. To accomplish both aspects of my philosophy, I don’t use traditional braces. Instead, I use both Damon braces and Invisalign. The Damon system is a set of

self-ligating braces that put much less force on the teeth than traditional braces. It also allows me to change the shape of the jaw structure within the mouth without pulling teeth, no matter how crowded someone’s mouth may be. With Invisalign, I’m frequently asked if the clear aligners provide the same quality outcome as traditional braces. The answer: definitely yes! Patients often don’t realize that the person who designs the Invisalign treatment (me!) has a lot of control regarding how their teeth move. It’s really a perfect combination of art and science, and because I started my practice with ample experience using Damon Braces, I could easily translate that into treatments using Invisalign. As a result of my ability to do well with Invisalign, I can treat younger patients (ages 7–10) who need orthodontic work. Because their mouths are already smaller, the hard wires associated with traditional braces can be quite painful. Then, after the braces are on, kids are frustrated trying to find food they can eat without causing pain

can keep eating what they want. In my experience, I’ve found that these younger patients’ parents are typically the most skeptical about this approach, but after even the first week, they love it. It’s not just easier; it’s extremely effective as well. The final way I keep my orthodontic practice philosophy in mind is by paying close attention to aesthetics and facial balance. One important thing for patients who still have a lot of growing to do is to make sure a patient’s lower and upper jaws balance. For example, if the lower jaw isn’t growing as quickly, I can use Invisalign treatment to help it grow in a forward direction. Additionally, due to recent changes in Invisalign products, I can now widen patients’ jaws, which creates more space for their tongue and allows for a wider opening of the airway. If nothing else, what I want patients and their families to know about my practice philosophy is that I am constantly researching new methods to maintain the process of providing the same excellent results with less discomfort. They can trust that I’ll be at the cutting edge of

technological innovations and that I’ll continue to make their orthodontic experience the best it can be.

or getting stuck. The Invisalign approach is so much easier and more comfortable for kids. Because they can

remove the aligners, they can continue improving hygiene techniques, and they

An Amazing Event Hosted by Dr. Alborzi A TRIBUTE TO THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF HAPPINESS

Since 2013, the United Nations has celebrated the International Day of Happiness as a way to recognize the importance of happiness in the lives of people around the world. This year on March 20, the U.N. invited anyone of any age — plus every classroom, business, and government — to join in the celebration of this joyous occasion. Alongside their efforts, our very own Dr. Alborzi hosted an event at the Church of Scientology of Silicon Valley to acknowledge the “Sad State of Happiness in the United States and the Role of Digital Media.” At the event, members of the community gathered to learn about the power of an informative booklet written by L. Ron Hubbard known as “The Way to Happiness.” Hubbard’s booklet is a commonsense guide to better living, containing 21 nonreligious precepts that

guide one toward making life decisions that are more conducive to happiness.

As the master of ceremonies, Dr. Alborzi presented the curriculum guide, built on Hubbard’s concepts, that includes a full semester of lesson plans, essays, and homework assignments. These were designed to elicit student participation in middle schools, high schools, universities, and the community at large. After her presentation, Dr. Alborzi then turned the event over to the guest speaker, Jennifer Kelley, our office’s executive assistant, who has over 23 years of experience in nonprofit leadership. In her treatise, titled “How to Build Respect in Our High-Tech City,” Jennifer discussed how modern technology is disassociating people young and old from their surroundings and other people. She explored how these same

people are fixated on their phones and other electronic devices, which prevents them from taking the time to actually interact with people. Jennifer finds the solution is an education that can lead everyone to make better decisions for themselves. She presented “The Way to Happiness” as the solution for this lack of education. The event’s guests departed with information packets, booklets, T-shirts, and hats, all to use for better distribution of the booklets. If you’re interested in this curriculum or want copies of the booklet to distribute, go to: TheWaytoHappiness.com.

QUESTION: AM I TOO OLD FOR BRACES?

Less Discomfort Because there are no rough brackets or edges to the aligners, there are fewer mouth sores and related issues with Invisalign. Additionally, due to the fact that aligners straighten teeth on a more gradual basis, patients find that the adjustment period takes far less time and is significantly less painful. More Options Due to Dr. Alborzi’s experience, even the most difficult orthodontic cases are candidates for Invisalign. She can do anything with the Invisalign appliance that can be done with traditional braces.

Even if you have a gorgeous smile, crooked teeth can be a confidence killer. Unfortunately, many adults who didn’t get the opportunity to have braces to straighten their teeth as children (or who perhaps did, but the issues were not completely rectified) find the prospect of having braces now to be mortifying. With advances in orthodontic treatment like Invisalign, the number of adults seeking out orthodontic care continues to rise. Here are just a few of the reasons why Invisalign is the right choice for adults who are ready to enhance their smile. Less Noticeable Most wearers claim that the best feature of Invisalign over traditional metal braces is the concealment. While it’s normal to start your treatment with some underlying fear that others can see your aligners, the truth is that no one will even know you’re wearing them unless you tell them. During the first few days of wearing the aligners, you will probably notice it is more difficult to speak, but your mouth will adjust to the extra bulk around your teeth. More Convenient Because you can take them out, Invisalign aligners make it much easier to take part in typical daily activities like brushing your teeth without the frustration caused by brackets or wires. One of the biggest complaints about braces is that they constantly collect food. With aligners, you no longer have to worry about what you eat. Simply pop them out, eat your meal, clean your teeth, and pop them back in.

How to Travel Sustainably PAGE 4

GO GREEN Get Out There With These Eco-Tourism Tips

Vacations can come with great expense, and not just for your bank account. According to a 2018 study published in Nature Climate Change, travel accounts for 8 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Cut through the greenwashing and do your part to lessen these emissions by traveling sustainably. Travel Green When possible, trains, hybrid buses, and carpooling are great alternatives to larger, more environmentally intrusive travel methods. Large cruise liners are detrimental to oceans, and airplanes emit large amounts of toxins into the air. However, you can cruise and fly with the earth in mind. Some cruise lines are working to reduce their impact by installing more eco-friendly lighting and materials, and flight experts recommend

using “green” airports, choosing fuel-efficient airlines, staying longer, and traveling less. If anything, it’s an excuse to extend your European vacation! Stay Green Where you stay impacts the environment as much as how you get there. Hotels use copious amounts of water for bathing and laundry, and they struggle to reduce energy because guests leave their lights and televisions on. However, many luxury resorts, woodsy cabins, and even entire countries have opted to make eco-tourism easier. If you’re looking for a region of the world committed to preserving nature, look no further than Iceland, Finland, and Sweden, which are ranked the three most environmentally friendly places in the world.

Do Green Man-made attractions like the Egyptian pyramids and Machu Picchu are some of the world’s greatest wonders, but Earth itself is pretty breathtaking. Check out natural attractions while hiking or camping in preserved forests, or soak up all the Caribbean has to offer by snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding. When you’re mindful of your surroundings and remain unobtrusive, there are endless outdoor activities you can explore. Some locations even partner with environmentally conscious organizations you can donate to or volunteer with. Opt for a green vacation and know that while you relax, the earth is getting a little relief too.
