A round-up of the 2023 FMB webinars

W e started offering webinars to members during the first lockdown in 2020 as a way of sharing useful information. We soon realised that this was a cost-effective and time-saving way of keeping members in touch with industry issues and providing guidance on a wide range of topics. If you haven't been to one of our webinars, you can give it a try at any time. Many are still available to view on demand in the members’ area of the website. Free of charge to members, they are short and concise to make best use of your time. Here is a summary of recent topics, all of which are still available to view. Public sector tendering: This is a reliable source of work for some of our members. With local authorities seeking to work with local SME builders, there may be more opportunities coming your way. The speakers on this webinar, which streamed live on 24 October, shared hints and tips for writing winning bids. Pricing and estimating: Delivered in June, this was a very popular webinar focusing on pricing and estimating for profit. Martin Trimble of Magnitude Quantity Surveyors shared his ideas on pricing, including a refresher on prelims, overheads and profit, and provided examples of the kind of detailed breakdown that could be useful in producing your own quotations. It is always useful to see how someone else does that job.

Pensions: Independent financial advisor Steve Coates talked about auto enrolment and shared expert tips alongside Rachael Barber from our partner The People’s Pension. Other topics covered this year included: turning brownfield sites into profitable developments (with the National Brownfield Institute); building your workforce through apprenticeships (with CITB); building IT security into your business (with Node IT); how Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) fellowship could benefit your business; creating a culture that nurtures employees’ wellbeing (with Nescafe); help for new house builders – a guide to getting started, featuring the CLC’s new guide to becoming a small housing developer; and the new broadband mandate and what it means for home builders.
