Update from the South

Firstly, congratulations to members from FMB South that won at the National Master Builder Awards: Build My Home Ltd won the House Builder Award, Stonewood Builders Ltd won the Commercial or Public Sector Project Award, and Lofthouse Residences Ltd was highly commended in the Building Company of the Year category. The standards shown in those projects and in all of the entries were extremely high; it’s a testament to the quality of the work that all of our Master Builders do. We have held board meetings for the two areas that make up our region, South West and Southern Counties, and a joint meeting at the end of November to discuss regional priorities. Watch out for updates in future editions and via other channels. Area board meetings for 2024 are also being finalised and there will be an opportunity for new members to apply to join the area boards, with elections taking place in spring. If you’re interested in helping to shape the FMB’s work in the South Region by joining your local area board or would like more information, please get in touch. FMB South has been speaking with a number of organisations from across our region including colleges, local authorities and framework providers with the aim of representing the FMB and you, our members. We’re sharing the focus of our new National President, Chris Carr, on collaboration and public sector opportunities. Having attended ToolFair Exeter in September and Kent Construction Expo in October, it was clear that there is a real interest from others to work with FMB members. Meetings have taken place with regional frameworks as we learn more about the opportunities these could provide members. Lastly, and by no means least, as

We are grateful to them and congratulate them on their appointment. The Revamp app: Robin Hayhurst, a seasoned construction coach, shared his expertise on business growth and mental wellbeing, offering coaching and mentoring to members. A discussion ensued around the importance of developing a robust customer journey, which led neatly into FMB Member Steve Sillwood introducing the Revamp app. The app is tailored to aid small construction firms by offering real-time project tracking, a dedicated communication tool, secure storage for crucial documents, user management for optimal team collaboration, and cost management to bolster transparency between contractors and customers. Steve impressed the board with the app’s functionalities, and some members are test driving it in a beta phase. Steve is encouraging other Our area board meeting debrief

The economy and trading conditions: discussions around the state of trade revealed a slow-down in enquiries due to higher interest rates. However, the silver lining is a decrease in materials prices, especially timber. A focal point of the discussion was how to balance billing and client responsibilities in project valuations.
