Attending meetings

Interview with the BBC on ULEZ FMB Director of Communications Seena Shah was interviewed by BBC Breakfast on the topic of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ). The FMB is challenging Transport for London (TfL) to ensure builders are given more flexibility when paying tariffs as, unlike other motorists, they are one of the only industries that need to transport tools and materials into the city via their vehicle. We will continue to support small construction firms on this issue.

As we look to 2024, we encourage you to get involved with the FMB, and to attend your regional meetings and events in person or online. Our regional meetings offer much value, with expert speakers from organisations such as Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and Local Authority Building Control (LABC), construction law specialists, industry suppliers and many more. We will hold meetings throughout the year with the Northern AGM taking place in spring in 2024. For more on becoming a regional board member, contact carolinemeehan@fmb.org.uk .

CITB and FMB work together What if the FMB developed a construction course that provided students the opportunity to learn full-time, with the right materials, longer teaching hours and a bursary that kept them in education? This is precisely what FMB London and CITB aim to achieve with a pilot course that would be funded by CITB to develop site-ready, highly skilled construction workers for the future. The London Board has identified a way to mitigate the skills crisis without relying on apprenticeships. We’ll update you as the project evolves. To find out more, contact Sam Eden on the details below.

Join our FMB Training Group What is the FMB Training Group? It’s an opportunity for FMB members to meet with training experts from across the construction industry to discuss skills-related issues that are affecting them. The discussions are valuable as they help the FMB to support members on a range of issues concerning skills. Can anyone join the training group? Yes, any member interested in training and supporting what the FMB does to promote and encourage educational and training projects within the London construction industry can join. You are not expected to have a great deal of knowledge, but you do need to be willing to share your experiences from your own company. How can I find out more about joining the group? You can express your interest by contacting the FMB Public Affairs team at PublicAffairs@fmb.org.uk .

Catching up with our award winners North Director Caroline Meehan met Paul Cherry of Cheshire Building and Joinery Ltd to present their Master Builder Award for winning in the National Small Renovation category. Unfortunately, Paul was unable to attend the awards. “Visiting Paul I learnt about his hopes and aspirations for his business and how important it is to him to be an FMB member,” Caroline said.
