CEF Construction Survey
THE MAIN FINDINGS OF THE SURVEY, WHICH COVERED THE FIRST SIX MONTHS OF 2022 INCLUDED:
36% of firms surveyed stated their main priority in the year ahead was to stabilise output and consolidate their business. 11% said their main priority was growth and expanding turnover. 17% stated their main aim was survival and staying in business by any means. 94% expect construction materials costs to continue to rise over the next three months. 62% feel there will be reduced opportunities for NI public sector work in the year ahead. 70% foresee a reduction in opportunities for NI commercial work.
38% warned that materials shortages are having a critical or serious impact on their ability to deliver on contracts/ projects. 68% expect an increase in demand for skilled labour in the next three months. 68% felt that rising material costs/ inflation could have a serious or critical impact on their ability to deliver on contracts/ projects. 68% said the use of alternative Government construction contract options which are more flexible in their design and approach would improve their willingness to bid for public sector work.
The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) has launched a consultation on a new draft Corporate Plan for the 2023- 2028 period. CEF will be responding to the consultation and is calling on members to submit comments to inform our consultation response. Some of the key measures and outcomes proposed in the draft corporate plan are as follows: A reduction in the number of serious and fatal accidents compared to the average in the previous Corporate Plan. A reduction in the number of major accidents compared to the average in the previous Corporate Plan. A reduction in the number of over three-day accidents compared to the average in the previous Corporate Plan. 80,000 interventions which will include 25,000 site visits. Deliver three annual cross-cutting themes to tackle a work activity known to be a cause of fatalities, serious injury or ill-health.
