ROGER GILLESPIE FCIOB, CHAIR OF THE CIOB BELFAST HUB COMMITTEE SHARES RECENT NEWS, AND DATES FOR YOUR DIARY… News and updates from CIOB NI

I am delighted to announce that three new construction industry professionals have joined the CIOB Belfast Hub committee. Mark Gilmore, Development Technical Manager at Dunlop Homes, Paul Isherwood, Director of Asset Management at the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, as well as Yvonne Conway, Project Manager at Woodvale Construction Company, have each come onboard. Mark, who is a past-Chair of the former CIOB in Ireland (Northern Centre), brings strong technical and commercial awareness. Paul has extensive client-side experience working for one of Northern Ireland’s largest construction industry employers, and Yvonne, who has carried out extensive work in compliance management, will each be an asset to the committee. CIOB EVENTS As autumn approaches, the CIOB has a programme of events planned. Events which members should consider attending are: September 22: Mullan Training will host a Microsoft Project workshop for CIOB members. Programmes are becoming increasingly more commonplace in the management of construction projects and central where an NEC contract is being used. This event is an ideal opportunity to learn about how Microsoft Project can be best utilised to aid the construction management process. Bookings are open and registration is free. Visit the CIOB website to reserve your place. November 12: There will be a CIOB Graduation ceremony in Belfast, sponsored by recruitment specialist Hays. This year it will be hosted in the

impressive surroundings of the Assembly Buildings Conference Centre in Belfast city centre. The popular annual event, which will include addresses by Mike Foy OBE, Past President of the CIOB, and Caroline Gumble, Chief Executive of the CIOB, is an opportunity for those who recently became a Chartered member of the CIOB to celebrate their achievement with family and colleagues. My advice is to book early as the Graduation event is always very well attended. CURRENT FOCUS The CIOB, both locally and internationally, is continuing to do a lot of work in two key areas: Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) The CIOB has launched a Diversity and Inclusion Charter. Companies are encouraged to adopt the recommended action plan points within it. A template

is available on the CIOB website which is a good starting point for companies to make changes to their businesses. There are also graphics that can be downloaded and used on social media, to show your clients that you are committed to making changes. Quality management The Build Safety Act has recently become law in England and Wales. The CIOB, through publishing its Code of Quality Management has been central in leading on the changes required to make buildings safer. There will be further news on this later this year.
