THE K I NG ' S B U S I N E S S professors and others, and that the especial object of their mockery would be, as it is, the second coming of Christ. To use Peter’s exact words, “In the last days mockers shall come with mockery, walking after their own lust, and saying, Where is the promise of His coming? for, from the day that the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.” But when He actually does come, as He surely will, then every mocking mouth shall be silenced and all infidels and atheists be overwhelmed with fear and dismay, and every mouth, instead of being filled with boastings of a crass evolutionary philosophy, will be filled with cries “to the mountains and to the rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of Him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: for the great day of their wrath is come; and who is able to stand?” (Rev. 6:15-17).' The second coming of Christ will be God’s own final answer to infidelity and atheism and agnosti cism in all their forms. II. The Second Coming of Christ, God’s Final Answer to the Destructive Criticism. The second coming of Christ, the Vis ible and Glorious return of Christ, will be God’s final answer to the destructive criticism. One of the fundamental postulates of the destructive criticism and of pretty much all that in our day is called “Higher Criticism,” (what ever the original and proper significance' of the term “Higher Criticism” may be) is that there can be no such thing as minute and detailed and supernaturally inspired, predictive prophecy, so when ever any minute and detailed prophecy is found in Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel or Daniel, or any other Old Testament prophet, the destructive critics take that at once as conclusive proof that this passage in Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, or other Old Testa ment prophetic^ book could not have been written by the person whose name
323 it has borne for so many centuries, but that it must belong to a later period. This fundamental postulate of the destructive criticism has already been proven untrue time and time again by the many minute and exact and literal fulfillments of prophecy that have already taken place, for example, by the prediction in Micah 5:2 regarding the place of the birth of the Messiah; tile prediction in Daniel 9:25-27 regarding the time of the manifestation of the Messiah to His people, and regarding His cutting off, i. e., His death, not for Himself, but for thé people; the many predictions concerning the manner of His reception by His people, the manner and details of His death, burial, and resurrection contained in Isa. 53, for we may bring these predictions down to the latest date that the most daring destructive critic ever thought of assign ing them to, and still they will be cen turies before their minute, detailed and literal fulfillment in Jesus of Nazareth,, to say nothing of the fact that there are many minute, detailed and specific pre dictions regarding the Jews contained in the scriptures of the Old Testament and the New which are being fulfilled before our very eyes today. But when the Lord Jesus comes again and the very many and the very literal and spe cific and minute and detailed predic tions connected with His second coming are fulfilled to the letter before the very eyes of men, in a way that cannot be misunderstood or mistaken, then the utter folly of the fundamental postulate of the destructive criticism will be seen by all. So the second coming of Christ, His visible return in glory, with all the events connected with that vis ible and glorious return will be God’s final and crushing answer to the destructive criticism in all its forms. Destructive critics, listen to what I say and repent of your folly now, and give up a type of criticism that beyond a peradventure was not only made in Ger many, the land not only of systematized
