is not called fire, only compared to fire. Flame-like tongues were distributing themselves throughout the assembly.— Lumby. The Holy Spirit starts a fire of holy enthusiasm in my soul, an intense and sacred love which will burn up all evil intruders.^—Jowett. Tongues suggest that the business of our lives should be to speak for Him.-gEchoes. In its purity‘and power, its searching and cleansing nature, fire is the most appropriate token of the presence of deity.—Peloubet. Fire is throughout the Word of God the special symbol and signal of the presence and power of God. —Pierson. Sat upon each of them. It is often said that the baptism of the Spirit is for the Church, the body as a whole, but here we are clearly taught that it is for each individual in the Church.;—Torrey. v. 4. All filled with the Holy Ghost. The New Testament distinguishes be tween having the Spirit, which is true of all believers, and being filled with the Spirit which is the believer’s privi lege and duty (4:29-31; Eph. 1:13, 14; 5:18). One baptism, many fillings.—Sco field. We receive the Spirit through un ion with Christ, we are filled with the Spirit through surrender to Him. We may have the constant manifestation of the Spirit by abiding in Him.—-Mc- Conkey. He did not only come upon each, but all were baptized with the Holy Spirit and united into a body. In 1 Cor. 12:13 the more complete revela tion is given concerning this fact. Since then, whenever a sinner believes in the finished work of Christ, he shares in that baptism and is joined by the same Spirit to that one body.—Anno. Bible. This outpouring was connected with the sacrificial death, of Christ as our pass- over (1 Cor. 5:7), and was the answer of the Father to the work of the Son, indicating that He is satisfied and well pleased with the offering.—Evans. Brooks 15-20). Appropri ately, therefore, on this day, the old law of ordinances was superseded by the new law of love.— Dummelow. Was fully come. Now that Pentecost has been fulfilled, no one needs to wait ten days for the baptism of the Spirit. There is no record of any such waiting since Pentecost. See 4:31; 8:15-17; 9:17-22; 10:44; 19:1-6.—K. B. 1916'. With one accord in one place. Be still, expectant, prayerful, if you would have Him breathe His power upon you.—Sel. v. 2. Sound from heaven. In the Greek, great' emphasis is laid upon the fact that this sound came “out of heaven.” It is wind out of heaven that we need today. We have in our churches too much “wind” of another sort.—Torrey. There was a sound to awaken them, fire to warm them, wind to move them, tongues to make them talk.—Inglis. Mighty wind. The wind, the tongues and the fire were not the Holy Spirit, but the signs of His advent.—Gray. v. 3. Cloven tongues like as of fire. It is to be noticed that the appearance
