(DON’T) DO IT YOURSELF: TikTok’s DIY Nail File Trend

I have to admit, I have been known to be a fan of do-it-yourself projects. Perhaps the dad in me comes out, or maybe it’s the hassle of having to call, make an appointment or wait on someone to come out for a quote, or maybe just my general impatience … but I have definitely taken to YouTube from time to time for various tasks and repair items around the house. When I heard of a new TikTok trend, I was more than concerned. The trend involves individuals using nail files to reshape or “fix” their teeth at home. What may seem like a quick, cosmetic touch- up is actually a dangerous practice with serious consequences. As a dentist, I want to be very clear: Filing your teeth at home is not a great idea. Teeth are covered in a hard, protective layer called enamel. Once you start filing away at this enamel, you can’t replace it. Unlike your nails or hair, which grow back, the enamel on your

teeth is an irreplaceable tissue. Filing it down not only weakens your teeth, but it can also lead to sensitivity, increased risk of cavities, and even permanent damage to the structure of your teeth. My other concern is that even if the enamel is reshaped with minimal tooth structure being filed, the causes of the chipping and wear are not being addressed and will likely continue. Should someone continue to file their teeth to “fix” the problem themselves, the combined tooth damage would be significant. If you’re unhappy with the shape or appearance of your teeth, there are safe, effective cosmetic dental options available. We would be more than happy to discuss simple, inexpensive options like cosmetic reshaping and other professional treatments that can give you the results you want without compromising your oral health. So, while TikTok might offer a seemingly easy fix, remember that your smile is worth protecting. Leave the dental work to the professionals. Your future smile and self will thank you!

Legendary Stuffed Peppers

Ingredients

• 4 bell peppers (any color), halved and seeded • 1 lb ground beef • 1 onion, diced • 1 clove garlic, minced • 1 tsp chili powder

• 1 tsp cumin • 1 14-oz can diced tomatoes • 1 cup cooked rice • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese • Salt and pepper, to taste

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 375 F. 2. Line a baking dish or baking sheet with parchment paper. Place the bell pepper halves in the baking dish. 3. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef, onion, and garlic until the beef is browned, then drain excess fat. 4. Stir in chili powder, cumin, diced tomatoes, rice, salt, and pepper. 5. Fill the 8 bell pepper halves with the beef mixture, then top with the shredded cheddar cheese. 6. Bake for 25–30 minutes or until the peppers are tender and the cheese is melted.
