One of the most fearful elements in the sudden situation was the savages’ insistence that the men permit themselves to be held in a circle, a warrior on either side of each Brazilian and missionary. The men recognized this as a treacherous design. The Indians, under the pretext of dancing, managed to get some of the explorers into a circle, interlocking their arms, each explorer between two savages. They even interlocked their fingers so the men were held in a vice-like grip. Others were stealing everything they could. If the party escaped with their lives, there would certainly be little else. Some course of action was necessary. Tom took his revolver out from its hiding place, strapped it on his hips, and walked up the bank to where the Indian was making off with his knife. He demanded it back. An older Indian stopped him and wouldn’t consent to his entering the jungle. He could recover only a hammock. A young warrior insisted on Harry’s accompanying him into the forest. They were just entering as Tom turned to leave. Tom had seen a large war club lying in readiness. One of the warriors picked it up and retreated to a point a little further into the woods. The old Indian motioned to Harry. His warning look and
