The men took advantage of the slight respite to enter the canoes. But the painted specters surged back. Now Tom introduced the phonograph. This interested them, but they shortly indicated that he put it away. The air was getting more tense. The men were in the canoes, but completely surrounded by Indians. It was impossible to push out into the river. The Indians now ordered the men to play their instruments again. This time they scrutinized them carefully. “There Shall Be Showers of Blessing” and “There Is Power in the Blood” rang across the river and echoed against the jungle. As fear of the instruments was overcome, some of the warriors tried striking the keys and buttons of the accordion.
