much interested in spiritual things, I would bring this before the Lord and remind Him I had asked for a missionary. For a while I tried to bring this to my children, but I soon realized it was not in my power to put this in their hearts; God had to do it. Once when you were away from home someone came to me, saying you had started to live carelessly and were throwing your life away. I said, “God will not throw him away. He will bring him back.” So, Harold, it was God who called you, and it is He who has done all the work in your life. There was one thing I was thankful for. When you were little, you would go and sit in the front of the church. You would listen to the preaching, and you would watch the old saints. You saw truth in them, and God gave you a longing to be like them. This helps to get us in the right way of life. I think Grandma had much to do in your life. She expected much out of you, and she prayed much for all her grandchildren. When I was about eight years old, one of my aunts died on the mission field in Africa. I so wished to take her place when I grew up, but my mother was left alone with us six children - all small - and when I talked of going to school, she would say we did not have the money. So I thought I would get married and bring up all my family for God, so that maybe I could have a hand in building for God’s kingdom. Believe me, I would rather see all my children in a far-off land serving God than living for themselves. When you were in the Navy, you wrote home, saying what a happy day you had helping in street meetings, seeing souls saved. You wrote that you now knew what God wanted you for. I thanked God; that was God smiling upon me.
