In an isolated environment where there is little opportunity for social life, no schedule of varying activities and monotony characterizes the diet and the days. One must have inner resources to draw on. But, at last, preparations for advance were nearing completion. While in Cuiaba purchasing supplies for the journey, Tom and Harry had met a group of Brazilian men preparing for an expedition up the Kuluene to make a survey of a large property which had been bought, sight unseen. The purchaser hoped to amass riches from the vast resources of timber and flora, and who could tell what other natural wealth? When they found that the missionaries were bound on an expedition in the same direction, it was agreed that they go together. They were on the verge of a new experience.
