sandflies, which with each bite draw blood, were present in literal clouds. There was never a moment’s respite from the itching and stinging bites. (Harry’s sores and boils with the resultant glandular swelling and pain had worsened.) But on Sunday, June 28, they passed a large river branch flowing into the Kuluene and the waterway became wider, passage freer, and travel faster. The canoes were making good time in deep water when suddenly one of those frightening hidden rocks became visible, and the pilot gave the boat a sudden turn. It caught Tommy off balance and, without any warning, the boy toppled into the river. There were sharp cries from the men, as they skillfully maneuvered the bark against the current to reach him. He was now swimming in the swift stream. When the courageous lad was recovered and helped into the canoe, he was pale and shaken from the frightening experience. Now, not only discomfort, but danger, too, were their constant companions.
