When the Arrow Flies

“Uncle Harold.” “Oh, you here again? Well, just hold your horses, and I’ll give you the best chocolate drink you’ve ever had in your life.” “I just wanted to ask you something. If we trust the Lord, and He doesn’t let the Indians kill us, why does He let the Indians kill other people? They’ve killed lots of people. I read a book called The Three Freds* , and the Indians clubbed all three of those missionaries to death. Why did God let them do that? Didn’t they trust the Lord?” “Yes, they trusted the Lord. Jesus was killed, and many of His followers have been killed, too. “The Bible says that some people had such faith in God that they conquered whole kingdoms, shut lions’ mouths, put out fires. When men tried to kill them with swords, they wouldn’t do it. Some women had so much faith that even members of their family who died came alive again. “It also says in the Bible that others had the very same faith, and do you know what happened? They were tortured and beaten with terrible leather thongs. They were thrown into dungeons, killed with stones, and even sawed in two. Some others had great faith in the Lord, but they were killed with swords. Some didn’t have any clothes except the skins they took off sheep or goats, and they couldn’t even have a house. They had to wander around from place to place, and they were tormented. They lived in deserts and caves and mountains.” † “That’s terrible, I think.”
