What is stage 2 melanoma? In stage 2 melanoma, the cancer cells have grown below the thin outer layer of the skin ( epidermis ) into the next layer of skin ( dermis ). It has not spread to nearby lymph nodes or distant sites. Because the tumor has not spread to distant parts of your body, your prognosis (outlook) typically remains good. Stage 2 is divided into 3 levels:

STAGE WHAT IT MEANS Stage 2A The tumor is either:

l 1–2 mm (millimeters) thick, with ulceration, OR l 2–4 mm thick, with no ulceration The tumor is either: l 2–4 mm thick, with ulceration, OR l More than 4 mm thick, with no ulceration

Stage 2B

Stage 2C

The tumor is more than 4 mm thick, with ulceration. These are aggressive tumors that are more likely to spread.
