Be aware of caregiver burnout Caregiver burnout is feeling exhausted — physically, emotionally and mentally. When you’re burned out, you may feel your attitude change from positive and caring to negative and unconcerned.

Burnout may also include:

l Not being able to sleep (insomnia) or restless sleep l Headaches and backaches l Feeling very tired and physically “drained” l Having a cold that won’t go away l Changes in your weight l High blood pressure l Feeling easily frustrated l Feeling overwhelmed or lonely l Depression or anxiety l Feeling like you have nothing left to give

People may feel burnout if they:

l D on’t ask for help l E xpect too much of themselves l H ave trouble saying “no” l O ften sacrifice their needs for the good of others l F eel like they’re the only person capable of giving care

You can avoid caregiver burnout. Take time to recharge your mind, body and spirit. Do not feel guilty for nurturing yourself. Do think of it as another way of helping your loved one — it will help you be a better caregiver.
