Tapping into transformational technology

As developments in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) continue apace, Julia Handl from Alliance Manchester Business School argues that a much more multidisciplinary approach is what is required to equip leaders with the skills they need to manage and maximise their potential

here has been much debate and speculation over the past couple of years about the potential impact of transformational technologies such as AI. It is affecting all sectors – from banking and cybersecurity to medicine and law, as well as higher education. Businesses need to think about how it could be – or is already – impacting their sector so they can get ahead of the curve. As a business school, we are responding to At Alliance Manchester Business School (AMBS), we launched a new executive education course last year called Data and AI for Leaders. This is designed to build conceptual understanding of AI and give people the tools to critically evaluate and appropriately utilise the systems available to them. Rather than simply understanding how AI works, it offers a more holistic approach that considers its applications and outcomes, plus the impact this will have on industry. T this in our teaching. Its broad spectrum of applications means that AI is no longer just part of computer science courses. Increasingly, leaders across a range of subjects need to understand what AI means to them and how they can best utilise it. We need to provide leaders in all fields with a rounded understanding of how AI works to make sure it is applied responsibly and effectively, as well as understanding how it is going to add tangible value to a business.
