building strong, healthy bodies, a natural revitalizer, a maljer of rich, red blood, a nerve quieter, and an antidote for that tired feeling.” To this we. heartily agree. We add that when the Holy Spirit referred to the simple truths of the Bible, He called them the “milk of the Word.” What a prescription for spiritual weakness, and all the ills of the soul, is a rich diet of this spiritual milk! Governors' Preferences *5 The Methodist Church recently conducted a survey to determine the religious preferences of the gover nors of our forty-eight states. Head ing the list were Methodists with 14, followed by Baptists with 10, Episco palians with 9, Presbyterians with 5, Lutherans with 4, and all other affiliations with 6. No breakdown of the “all other” group is given, so while they could all be Catholic, this is not likely. At any rate, here is an interesting absence of the usual imposing precentages of Ro man Catholic preponderance. Temperance Teaching It is a fact wortny of note that the country of Sweden emerged from the last bloody holocaust with little depletion of national resource and with honor unsmirched. A number of outstanding national policies of this land could well be adopted by our country. For instance, the govern ment of Sweden itself educates the youth of that land with regard to the evils of alcohol and the value of temperance. This education is accom plished by moving pictures, temper ance societies, courses for teachers, general lectures and public school temperance classes. Sweden does not consider this financial output extrav agant, for the money is repaid to the state many times over in better homes, better families, and better health. On the negative side, there are fewer hospitals, insane asylums, prisons and accidents. 105,500 Bibles The 1946 report by the American Bible Society reveals that 105,500 Bibles were sent to the Soviet Union, the first shipment in over twenty years. This is good news indeed! T H E K I N G ' S B U S I N E S S

been drinking, while of all accidents that occurred, the number involved who had been using liquor was from thirty to forty-eight per cent. Price of Practice *5 Recently the press printed sev eral important speeches by Mr. Hen ry C. Luce, editor in chief of Life, Time and Fortune. In these speeches, Mr. Luce addressed himself to the religious thinking class, calling them to turn from sterile ecclesiasticism to a faith productive of good works. While there was nothing particular ly objectionable in his preachments, it is interesting to note how Mr. Luce fails to practice these sentiments. For instance, in 1946, there were 1,137 liq uor advertisements on 810 pages of Life, Time and Fortune, netting at current advertising rates, the sum of $8,500,000 for Mr. Luce and Company! It would cost Mr. Luce at least this much to practice what he preaches! Only Five Per Cent The Lord Mayor of London, Eng land, in a recent address to the Lon don City Mission, stated that only five per cent of that city’s population attended church with any regularity. This is in spite ef the terrible suf fering London experienced during World War II, and the fact that the British Isles came so near to being defeated. One cannot but associate such a report with the rumors that the sun is at last beginning to set on the British Empire. Surely it is time for God to raise up another pair of Wesleys to lead Great Britain back to Him! Oldest Tonic “There are times now and then when we all feel a little below par. If, instead of rushing off for a bottle of Dr. Bunkum’s Tonic to brace us up, we would take a bit of the great est of all food tonics, milk, we would be a different lot of men and wom en.” This statement is part of an edi torial published twenty - five years ago by the Metropolitan Life Insur ance Company, which continues: “Milk is nature’s patent, the only food made solely for food. It cannot be produced artificially. It is the oldest, prescription in the world for

Caution f *5 There has been a great deal said the last few years about the won der-working curative powers of cer tain new drugs. However, more re cent reports show that these drugs, while they may cure particular dis eases under treatment, are often times exceedingly damaging to va rious parts of the body. Many have believed that with the advent of peni cillin and the sulpha drugs that those diseases which are the actual wages of sin might be reduced, but evidently they are still being paid for in full. Fire Insurance Believe it or not, Our Sunday Visitor, the Catholic weekly newspa per, in its issue of August 11, 1946, ran the following amazing advertise ment: “Are you insured? Write and ask about our plan to offer the Gre gorian masses after your death. This is real insurance for your soul.” There are thirty of these Gregorian masses for a soul in purgatory for which the minimum price is thirty dollars. P ledge The annual subscription made for missions by the First Baptist Church of Dallas, Texas, exceeds $375,000. The pastor of this large and aggressive church for forty years was the late Dr. George W. Truett. The present pastor is Dr. W. A. Griswell, formerly of Musko-. gee, Oklahoma. While it is true that the First Baptist Church of Dallas has a membership running into the thousands, still their per capita giv ing is high above the average. Insurance Rise An increase in automobile liabil ity insurance rates in twenty - nine states has been requested by the Na tional Bureau of Casualty and Surety Underwriters. This has been made necessary by the increasing number of traffic accidents which last year killed 33,500 persons and injured hundreds of thousands more. The great contributing cause has been proven to be drink. One out of every four fatal accidents reported involved either a pedestrian or driver who had Page Twenty-eight
