THE KING’S BUSINESS

darken his door again. I was so astpnished that I could only stare at him, for he was greatly beloved, and had never given me a cross word before. He was so angry that he trembled, and as he walked out I thought “good-bye,” but could not say a word. Some time after, I met his wife on the street car and she would not speak to me. You hear on all sides how sweet they are, and how they think no evil—that is when you are on their side, but turn against them, and they will give you the “death treat ment.” As my brother was the first reader in the church, he had the privilege of send ing mental waves against me and to try to think me out of existence. He acknowl edged it to me afterwards and said that they take up all their enemies in that way every morning. He said that is what open ed his eyes, and he came to the conclusion that a thing that pretended to be. religious and made one deny his own sister, was not from God. It worked for good after all. Just how much I was affected by it, or whether I was affected by it at all, I cannot say, for I was sick beiore. But I do know that I got worse and finally went to a hos pital and was only saved through prayer. God raised up people to pray for me. One day, about three months after my brother had told me never to darken his door again, he sent for me to come to his office, and when I came he treated me kind ly and said, “You were right, I was hypno tized, and when I tried to get away,' it was like getting out of a steel trap,” . Tliev had a large sum of money which they con sidered a present from him, and when asked to give it back, they refused and sent one after another to try to induce him to let them keep it, but the more they talked, the angrier he got, until finally he said, “I will give you until ten o’clock tomorrow morn ing to bring it back, or I will begin suit.” And not until they knew he meant it did they return the loan. A.N APPEAL TO PASTORS While I knew they were wrong, and turned against them, I did not know how they were wrong, and was not free from its power by any means, but God was working

While on that trip I was in great physical distress, and thought that while so many were together who were agreed that there was no disease, I would surely be healed; but as one after another gave me treatment with no results, and I was “nothing bet tered, but rather grew worse,” I began to be weakened in my faith. They had many things to sell, and among them souvenir spoons, with the temple in the bowl and Mrs. Eddy’s head on the han dle. They sold for $3.50 and $4.00 each, and all Scientists were supposed to buy at least one, and those who could afford it were to buy a dozen. They also sold pic tures .of Mrs. Eddy, never less than a dol lar. All of these things began to affect me, and when I arrived home, I felt impelled to go to my brother and tell him it was all wrong. At first I hesitated, realizing something of the trouble I would get into, but could not get away from thp fact that I ought to go. Finally T went to his office and told him how he was hypnotized and misled. I do not remember all I said but it was enough as circumstances proved. He thanked me for it, and said, “If you see a snake coiled at my feet, that I do not see, and do not tell me. you are responsible for my life.” If I had stopped there, it maybe this article never would have been written, but I had a little controversy with three others about something they had said or done, and I went to see them. They denied everything, as they are taught to do in their sinless ( ?) religion. Then I went to the head of the church and told her a few things that I did not like in one of her profession. She tried to convince me that she was right, and from that day there was a battle royal between the Scientists and myself. A BATTLE ROYAL The head of the church went to my brother and told him that I was not his sister, but only error, evil, a lie, etc., and the other names they use of people they do not like. A few days after, my brother came to my house in wrath, and told me I had made up all I had said, and ordered me to never
