Solutions for Diseases

Root-infecting Pathogens

Fairy Ring Timing for fairy ring prevention is based on university research and begins in the spring when soil temperatures taken at 11:00 am at a 2” depth averages 65-70ºF for five consecutive days in the warmer regions of the US. These applications should be watered-in with 0.125-0.25” to move fungicide down to where the fungi are active. Though Stressgard ® formulation and watering-in minimizes potential negative effects of DMI fungicides, Castlon™ can be substituted for Tartan ® Stressgard in elevated temperatures. The Envu program below provides guaranteed satisfaction and if your expectations are not met, please contact your Envu Distributor or Envu Area Sales Manager. We have learned that preventive fungicide applications can be highly effective when made just as the target organism becomes active, which is usually weeks to months ahead of when visual symptoms occur. Not surprisingly, we also understand that these pathogens are opportunistic and tend to be most problematic when the turf is already compromised by other stresses such as traffic, soil conditions, shade, etc. Lastly, disease diagnostic labs usually identify the presence of multiple pathogens in turf samples with root decline, indicating the complexity within the root environment. When dealing with a root pathogen at any given time, it is critical to implement a comprehensive management plan, including cultural practices and fungicide applications targeting primary and secondary root pathogens that may be compromising the turf throughout the season. There has been a significant amount research in recent years to better understand the ecology of root-infecting pathogens and the diseases they incite. Notably our understanding of pathogenic nematodes, Pythium root diseases, and ectotrophic root-infecting fungi (such as take-all root rot, summer patch, and spring dead spot) has improved dramatically. This research has led to breakthrough discoveries that have improved our recommended management strategies.
