From the dot Desk As Editor of the dot , it is a pleasure for me to bring out this edition at a time when Qatar continues to stand tall and strong even after almost two years of the ongoing blockade that was meant to halt this nation’s rise. The ABA Holding ’s support of Qatar has been unequivocal and continues to date, strengthened by over seven decades of loyalty to the country we call home. Keeping in step with Qatar’s growth, the ABA Holding is also growing and expanding. As evidenced by a few highlights I will point to below, the Group’s focus as always is to bring the best international experiences and merchandise to Qatar and its people. It is with great pride and pleasure that ABA opened 21 High st , the ultimate outdoor shopping destination, where Retail meets Culture & Art. We also declared open the region’s first ever Galeries Lafayette , establishing a new flagship store in Doha which immediately brought its unique know-how in fashion and luxury, and unveiled a Parisian lifestyle experience for local and international shoppers alike, right here in the heart of Katara. Dohatna Logistics Park (DLP) was another
giant step that the ABA took, to elevate the nation’s profile and partner in its growth. Managed by ABA Logistics, DLP is the achievement of a futuristic vision in warehouse contracting, fleet and transport. Our Group also harnessed the latest in technology for the people of Qatar at Monoprix . The SMART Retail Solution will be launched in the Monoprix outlet at Msheireb Downtown Doha and will be the first of its kind, and a first in the Middle East region, as one of the most advanced retail software solutions for enhanced customer service. While these achievements are significant, we can confidently say that our journey has just begun. Our commitment remains unchanged to partner Qatar in its continued development and our determination has only grown to ensure that this nation remains self-reliant and free. As your corporate newsletter, the dot will continue to update you on the progress of ABA. I would like to stress the importance of your support in this regards. What is CLOUD COMPUTING ?
The practice of using a network of remote servers hosted on the Internet to store, manage and process data, rather than a local server or a personal computer. ABA is using certain Cloud-based applications such as Symphony, Oracle CRM, etc. Why to go for Cloud computing?
1. Flexibility Cloud-based services are ideal for businesses with growing or inconsistent bandwidth demands. If the needs, increase it’s easy to scale up the Cloud capacity, drawing on the service’s remote servers. Likewise, if it is needed to scale down again, the flexibility is baked into the service. This level of agility can give businesses using Cloud computing a real advantage over competitors – it’s not surprising that CIOs and IT directors rank ‘ operational agility ’ as a top driver for Cloud adoption. 2. Disaster recovery Ideally, businesses of all sizes shall invest in robust disaster recovery to secure their environment from certain disaster. If the application is on Cloud, disaster recovery is one of the option provided by the Cloud service provider. The company need not to worry about system downtime or business impact in case of disaster, because these factors are normally taken care of by the Cloud service provider. * Cloud application disaster recovery: Like Cloud applications, the disaster recovery option itself is also available now as a service on Cloud. Nowadays, companies implement Cloud-based backup and recovery solutions that save time, avoid large upfront investment and roll up third- party expertise as part of the deal. * Disaster recovery site and facility: A company may avail of
do more together, and do it better. Cloud-based workflow and file sharing apps help them make updates in real time and gives them full visibility of their collaborations. 6. Work from anywhere With Cloud computing, if we get an Internet connection we can be at work. And with most serious Cloud services offering mobile apps, we are not restricted by which device we got in hand. 7. Document control The more employees and partners collaborate on documents, the greater the need for impervious document control. Before the Cloud, workers had to send files back and forth as email attachments to be worked on by one user at a time. Sooner or later – usually sooner – we end up with a mess of conflicting file content, formats and titles. And, as even the smallest companies become more global, the scope for complication rises. According to one study, "73% of knowledge workers collaborate with people in different time zones and regions at least monthly." When we make the move to Cloud computing, all files are stored centrally and everyone sees one version of the truth. Greater visibility means improved collaboration, which ultimately means better work and a healthier bottom-line. If we are still relying on the old way, it could be time to
try something a little more streamlined.
disaster recovery site and backup services for their data center from the Cloud facility provider. In case of disaster, the Cloud service provider recovers the company's computer environment based on the service level agreement. This is more economical as making a hot site available means doubling the number of licenses, infrastructure (hardware/software) and duplicating all other facilities available in the current data center. 3. Software updates The advantage of Cloud computing is that the servers are off- premise, out of sight . Suppliers take care of the maintenance of hardware and software for us and roll out regular software updates – including security updates – so we don’t have to worry about wasting time maintaining the system ourselves . This leaves us free to focus on the things that matter, such as growing our business. 4. Capital expenditure- free Cloud computing cuts out the high cost of hardware . We simply pay as we go and enjoy a subscription-based model that’s kind to our cash flow. Add to that the ease of setup and management and our huge IT project looks a lot friendlier. 5. Increased collaboration When our teams can access, edit and share documents anytime, from anywhere , they’re able to
8. Security Losing a laptop is a major business problem. Potentially greater than the loss of an expensive piece of kit is the loss of the sensitive data inside it. Cloud computing is expected to gives us greater security when this happens. Because since our data is stored in the Cloud, we can access it no matter what happens to our machine. And we can even remotely wipe data from lost laptops so it doesn’t get into the wrong hands. 9. Competitiveness Moving to the Cloud is expected to give access to the latest technology, for everyone . It also normally allows smaller or medium businesses to act faster than big, established competitors. A Pay-as-you-go service and cloud business applications mean small outfits can run, while remaining lean and nimble. While the above points spell out the benefits of Cloud computing for our business, moving to the Cloud isn’t an entirely narcissistic act. When our Cloud needs vary, our server capacity scales up and down to fit. So, we only use the energy that we need and don’t leave oversized carbon footprints. 10. Environmentally friendly

ABA Beverages holds special FORWARD workshop to initiate UAT
Supply Chain Planning, Manufacturing & Maintenance, Distribution and Finance. In the first process of Supply Chain Planning for the division, proper planning will be carried out for providing the resources that are needed to produce the beverages products. For example, determining the number of bottles needed according to the demand in the market during a specific time- frame. The second process of Manufacturing and Maintenance involves the bottling of the beverages products as well as the maintenance of the overall fleet machinery. The Distribution process will help in planning and handling the delivery cycle of manufactured products. During the whole production phase, Finance comes into the picture with transactions to and fro during most of the other processes. Implementation of these four processes will make their lives easier as it will automate all major daily operations . Around 150 test cases will be tested by 35 users who are expected to generate 500-1,000 transactions across these four processes. An equivalent of 2,600+ man hours is expected to be put in during this three weeks of UAT.
Ali Bin Ali Holding ’s FORWARD application has already gone live in 12 different divisions and is stabilizing at an impressive pace. Now, Beverages - one of the most important business divisions of the Group - is gearing up for the rollout early next year, and the team is taking all possible steps to make it foolproof.
