3 Roadway Element
Figure 13. Recommended Cross Sections Map
Cross Sections Cross sections are developed to provide a visual understanding of the balance between the different uses of a street. They identify what portion of the right- of-way is dedicated to certain elements. The following cross sections are broken up by Street Type, as defined in the Town’s Standard Specifications and Details. While the Town’s Standard Specifications and Details include Street Types 1 - 11, the CTP only documents Street Types 8, 9, and 10. • Street Type 8 includes minor collectors and are typically 2-lanes. These streets collect traffic from residential areas and distribute them to larger streets. • Street Type 9 includes minor arterials and major collectors. They are typically 2- to 4-lanes and divided by a median. • Street Type 10 includes major or minor arterials within the Town that have a typical ROW of 200-ft to 300-ft, such as portions of US 401 (Main Street/ Fayetteville Road) and NC 55 Highway (Broad Street). As part of the 2040 CTP , the cross sections were updated to improve uniformity of the cross sectional elements, as well as modernize many of the elements for the needs of today’s transportation system. This process also sought to reconcile inconsistencies in the prior CTP, the LDO, and the Standard Specifications and Details. Key changes to the cross sections between the 2035 CTP and the 2040 CTP include: • Reduction of the default lane width from 12-feet to 11-feet to help control traffic speeds • Widening of the planter and utility strips behind the curb • Accommodation of a broader vision for multimodal transportation and Complete Streets • Provision of paved shoulders to increase driver safety and serve as a functional space for bicyclists in the absence of more physically separated facilities • Expansion of the use of medians along Type 8/9 collector roads
