MORE THAN MOTION THE STRENGTH AND SOUL OF PHYSICAL THERAPY

October is a rewarding time for a physical therapist.

technology dominating our everyday lives, we usually work in one place for hours without giving ourselves ample time to move around. A sedentary lifestyle can harm a body as much as a serious fall or accident. Sometimes, physical therapy is the best way to get our bodies back on track. Regardless of why they come to our center, our clients mean the world to us — and there’s no better feeling than knowing we’ve improved their quality of life in some way. Moving forward, we’ll continue to do all we can to educate, inform, and inspire everyone who depends on us. We’re always happy to answer your questions or concerns, and we have special offers and additional services throughout the year. If you’re new to our services or a returning client interested in seeing where we are today, our website ( CampusCommonsPhysicalTherapy.com ) is a great place to start. Of course, nothing we provide at Campus Commons Physical Therapy would be possible without our talented team. Everyone here takes tremendous pride in their work, and they share my enthusiasm whenever a client’s life changes in ways they may have thought impossible. Most importantly, I celebrate Physical Therapy Month with every client I’ve had the pleasure of knowing over the years. We’ve shared as many stories as we have visits, and it’s been an honor getting to know you as people in the same way you’ve gotten to know me as a father and family man. Thank you for the privilege of being your physical therapist.

This is Physical Therapy Month, an excellent opportunity to recognize and celebrate the art of physical therapy and its power to improve a person’s mobility and well-being. As someone who’s built a life for himself in this field, I’m grateful for all the extraordinary people I’ve served over the years. Many of our clients are returning patients, and we have the good fortune of introducing new ones to the benefits of physical therapy every day. I didn’t get into this industry to be a business owner or make a million bucks; I pursued this line of work to have a long career helping people. The reward of seeing someone get better and experience greater independence through our care will always be high on my list of life goals, and it remains a gift I receive every day at Campus Commons Physical Therapy. So, what exactly is physical therapy? Well, my years in business have shown me that there’s never one straightforward answer to that question. For some people, it means embracing new tools to help regain strength and mobility after sustaining an injury. For others, it means exploring ways to keep their bodies working well as time and age take their toll on their muscles and joints. That said, understanding what it isn’t is more clear-cut. Contrary to what some may believe, it isn’t just about exercise — it’s about fostering a mindset and lifestyle that support long-lasting health. It also involves injury prevention at any age. That point is critical, as people may slowly injure themselves without knowing it. For example, many of our clients experience postural deficits or ergonomic issues that often develop while sitting in front of computers or driving for extended periods. With

What Celebrities Get Right — and Wrong — About Apple Cider Vinegar VALUABLE OR JUST VIRAL?

As celebrities go, Victoria Beckham commands more respect than most. Since earning early fame as Posh Spice of the Spice Girls, Beckham married soccer superstar David Beckham and became an entrepreneur and fashion designer. She is known for her commitment to fitness and healthy living. Among Beckham’s favorite wellness hacks is a simple commodity — apple cider vinegar. Made from crushed, fermented apples, it can be purchased in liquid or capsule form. Beckham says she starts every day by downing 2 tablespoons of the bitter liquid. While it’s no superdrug, apple cider vinegar is loaded with antioxidants and low in calories. Some research suggests it can help those who use it in small amounts to control their weight and keep blood sugar at healthy levels. But is it all positive without any downside? Here are a few more findings about apple cider vinegar, plus a few cautions. POTENTIAL BENEFITS As a weight-loss aid, dieters who add apple cider vinegar to their daily intake have more success in losing weight than those who just cut calories, according to a controlled study of 39 people on diets,

because it helps reduce appetite. It may also have beneficial effects on blood sugar levels and oxidative stress in patients with diabetes and dyslipidemia, or abnormal levels of fats in the blood, according to a 2019 clinical trial. In addition, researchers have found some evidence that apple cider vinegar may reduce fasting plasma glucose and blood lipid levels, both early signs of cardiovascular disease, according to a summary of nine studies. THE DOWNSIDE Other claims about apple cider vinegar aren’t supported by research. For example, the idea that it can help ease the symptoms of eczema, a skin ailment, is not based on science. Also, apple cider vinegar may cause indigestion, and its acidic content can harm tooth enamel. However, Beckham recommends diluting and sipping it through a straw to protect your teeth. The bottom line? Consult a physician before embracing apple cider vinegar as a health supplement, and do your own research into popular ideas about its benefits before trying it. However, based on research so far, Posh Spice may be on to something!

Mindset and Milestones A GUIDE TO PUSHING THROUGH PT

Physical therapy can transform your life, but the path isn’t always smooth.

getting discouraged. Going the distance may not be easy, but it will be worth it in the long run — and every little step matters and is worth celebrating. A STRONG SUPPORT NETWORK CAN HELP. Not everyone feels at their best all the time. There may be times during your PT journey when your spirits are low. It never hurts to reach out to friends and family members who can offer comfort and support during challenging times. Online communities can be an additional way to connect with others — especially those who may empathize with your situation and offer tools that have helped them persevere. Studies have shown that socialization can strengthen everything from our mood to our immune system, so surround yourself with positive people as often as possible. YOUR STORY IS WORTH TELLING — EVEN IF JUST TO YOURSELF. Whether you’ve hit a major milestone or feel yourself slipping into a temporary slump,

As you work toward reaching your PT goals, it’s common to have moments when your outlook or motivation dips. First and foremost, these feelings are normal and typically temporary . Keeping a positive attitude is key to achieving success. Here are three things to consider when dark clouds keep your mind from reaching for the sky. THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS A ‘SMALL’ ACHIEVEMENT. When dealing with pain or facing a tough goal, we’re sometimes tempted to focus on the mountaintop we need to reach instead of acknowledging the value of every step we take. Succeeding in physical therapy often takes patience, as overcoming obstacles may require considerable time and consistency. Don’t get frustrated when it feels like things are taking too long; remember that one PT session puts you miles ahead of anyone who gives up after

chronicling your ups and downs in an online or written journal may help you acknowledge your victories or work through your struggles. By tracking as many steps as possible along the way, you may be surprised by how far you’ve come on your road to recovery.

LEGENDS WHO THRIVE IN THEIR 80S

When it comes to physical fitness, a person’s attitude often means more than their age.

health through their VCRs. Now 87, she recently launched a virtual reality workout series via Meta Quest’s “Supernatural” online platform. Despite experiencing osteoporosis and other health concerns in her later years, she remains an active and celebrated fitness icon. THE SPACE HERO REGAINS HIS STRENGTH. Whether he’s playing space scoundrel Han Solo in the “Star Wars” series or adventurous archaeologist Indiana Jones, Harrison Ford has earned icon status for his action-packed film roles. However, those moments on the big screen have come at a price for the 83-year-old actor, including sustaining a torn ACL on the set of 1981’s “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and a spinal injury on the set of 1984’s “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.” These days, Ford actively pursues physical therapy and rehabilitation to maintain his physical health, working toward returning to some activities he enjoyed in his younger years. “I’m recovering from various injuries, so I continue to keep myself moving,” he told People in 2023. “I love tennis and riding road bikes over distance. I can’t play tennis anymore because of my injured shoulders, but I’m working on getting back to being able to play.”

Here are three examples of celebrities who have overcome health issues to remain active and fit well into their 80s.

THE STONE ROLLS ON. At 82, The Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger still performs for millions of fans after over 60 years in the music business. Despite a heart condition that resulted in a valve replacement when he was 75, the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer maintains an active touring and recording schedule. While many rockers have a reputation for risky personal behavior, Jagger has focused more on health than self-indulgence in recent years, adopting a rigorous routine that includes physical therapy, yoga, sprinting, strength training, meditation, and dance. The hard work has clearly paid off, as The Stones’ 2024 tour grossed more than $200 million in ticket sales. THE WORKOUT QUEEN STILL CONQUERS. Few celebrities have spotlighted the benefits of exercise more than Jane Fonda. In the 1980s, her bestselling “Jane Fonda’s Workout” video was a cultural juggernaut that helped millions of viewers get a tighter grip on their

What Your Food Cravings Are Trying to Tell You

YOUR BRAIN’S REWARD SYSTEM IS DRIVING THE URGE.

Do you ever find yourself reaching for chocolate late at

a magnesium deficiency, while craving salty foods can indicate dehydration or a lack of electrolytes. That said, it’s essential to pause and assess. Not every craving means your body needs that exact food. MEMORIES AND EMOTIONAL TRIGGERS PLAY A ROLE. Many food cravings are tied to learned behaviors and emotional associations. If you were rewarded with sweets as a child, your brain might now associate ice cream with comfort or safety. These conditioned patterns are powerful, but you can reprogram them. Food cravings aren’t just about what’s in the pantry. They’re about what’s happening in your brain, body, and emotions. When you understand the drivers of your cravings, you can make choices that support your well-being instead of fighting these urges blindly.

Cravings often originate in the brain’s limbic system, responsible for behavior, emotion, and long-term memory. When you’re stressed or low, your brain searches for a quick hit of dopamine, the “feel-good” chemical. Foods high in sugar, fat, or salt can deliver that boost quickly, which is why comfort foods are hard to resist. PROCESSED FOODS FOSTER ADDICTION. Research from the University of Michigan has shown that highly processed foods can stimulate the brain’s reward centers in ways similar to addictive substances. That’s why stopping after one cookie or chip can feel nearly impossible — the brain is wired to want more. CRAVINGS MAY SIGNAL PHYSICAL NEEDS. Not all cravings are emotional. Sometimes, your body is genuinely trying to tell you something. For example, craving chocolate may indicate

night or suddenly craving salty chips in the middle of the afternoon? You’re not alone and definitely not “lacking willpower.” Food cravings are a complex mix of

biology, psychology, and emotional cues, and understanding them can help you respond in healthier, more intentional ways. CRAVINGS ARE A UNIVERSAL EXPERIENCE. Studies show that over 90% of people experience food cravings, with women more likely to crave sweet foods like chocolate, and men more often craving savory options like meat or pizza. So, if you’ve ever thought you were alone in your cravings, know that this is a near-universal human experience.
