Away In A Manger Words and music by Martin Luther The first two stanzas were written by Martin Luther, supposedly for his small son’s Christmas celebration, in 1530, although some hymnographers place the date as late as late as 1535. There is a dispute over whether or not he composed the music for the song, but he is generally credited with hav ing done so. Several more recent musi cal settings have been provided, but Luther’s original tune, over four hun dred years old, seems to be increasing ly popular. The stanza beginning “ Be near me, Lord Jesus” was written by Dr. John T. McFarland in New York City in 1904. This information comes from Bishop William F. Anderson, who wrote: “When I was secretary of the Methodist Board of Education, 1904- 1908, I wanted to use ‘Away In A Manger’ in a Children’s Day program one year. It had but two stanzas. Dr. McFarland, then secretary of our Board of Sunday-schools, was my near neighbor. I asked him to write a third stanza.” Christ Receiveth Sinful Men Music by dames McGranahan Two centuries ago this song was being sung, although the original tune is no longer in use. The words were written in 1671 by a minister in Eng land whose name was Neumaster. James McGranahan composed the present melody a half-century ago. All the Way My Lord Leads Me On a certain occasion Fanny Crosby needed five dollars, and knew not from whence it would come. She en gaged in earnest prayer. A few min utes later a gentleman called at her home and handed her five dollars. I have no way of accounting for this, she later wrote, “ except to believe that God, in answer to my prayer, put it into the heart of this good man to bring the money. My first thought was, ‘In what a wonderful way the Lord helps me!’ I immediately wrote a hymn-poem, ‘All The Way My Saviour Leads Me,’ and Dr. Lowry set it to music.” Words by Fanny Crosby Music by Robert Lowry
