Send to this column in care of The King's Business. To Tell The Truth Dear Aunt Betty: I have been reading your answers to other kids, and I think you can help me. I am sixteen; a Junior in High School this fall. I have been a Christian for two years and 1 would like to be a missionary to the Aucas or some tribe like that. Like Douglas from Nebraska, whose letter I enjoyed, I too thank God for saving me. I want to live a real Christian life but I have a very bad habit. All my life it has been hard for me to tell the truth. This began when I was a little kid. When I was caught doing something wrong, I would always lie out of it. M y mother tried to break me of this and she spanked me twice as hard when she found out / was not telling her the truth. I didn’t worry about it until I became a Christian. Now 1 want to be a man of my word. I don’t lie as much as I did but when I am with a bunch of kids, I get carried away, and it gets the best of me. Do other teenagers have this trouble, or is it just me? Sometimes I think their stories are pretty “ tall,” too. Can you give me any suggestions? Lewis, Fargo, North Dakota My dear Lewis: My heart goes out to you in this problem. Yes, this sin plagues not only “ other teenagers” but also men and women who have been Christians many years. To be absolutely truthful in everything is not easy but the Lord requires nothing less. You remember what David said, “ I said in my haste, all men are liars” (Psalm 116:11), and in Jeremiah 17:9 we read: “ The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?” I am glad, Lewis, that while you are young, you want to conquer this evil habit which becomes worse the more one indulges in it. I think of the old couplet: “ Oh, what a tangled web we weave When first we practice to deceive!” First of all, recognize this habit for what it is: a terrible sin in the sight of God, who condemns it severely in His word.
