From Corporate Wings to Entrepreneurial Skies: My Journey to Legacy Jets

Legacy Quarterly
F or years, my life was the epitome of a professional pilot, cruising through the skies for a steady paycheck, adhering to the predictability of the job. While comfortable and prestigious, this existence left me yearning for more—a desire to explore not just the skies but my own potential beyond the cockpit of a corporate jet or airliner.
My journey from the routine of corporate America to the helm of my own private jet management company, Legacy Jets, is a testament to the power of change, passion, and persistence. I vividly remember one turning point that came during a flight in China. I was on yet another routine flight as an airline captain, the kind I had done countless times
before. That evening, bored of the monotony of the job, waiting for the last flight of the day, and reflecting on the monotonous cycle my career had become, I called my then-fiancé, Lea. I confessed to her how I felt trapped in a loop, performing the same tasks repeatedly, with no end. It was during this conversation that Lea said something that would change the course of my life. She

told me, “Come home and start a business.” She reminded me of our digital marketing venture, which we had started together, but she also knew that my true passion lay in aviation. Lea’s encouragement was the catalyst I needed. Her belief in me and her readiness to embark on this new journey together gave
me the strength to consider a path I had never dared. She saw the potential for something greater, a way to merge my passion for aviation with our entrepreneurial spirit. That moment I marked the beginning of my new career as an aviation entrepreneur—a dream that would take us beyond the digital realm of our media business and back into the skies.
Transitioning from an employee pilot to an entrepreneur was fraught with challenges. destination. From bespoke in-flight services to the flexibility of flight schedules, we ensure that every aspect of our service is tailored to meet our clients’ needs. Reflecting on this journey, I realize that Legacy Jets is more than the sum of its flights; it’s a story of transformation and partnerships. Leaving the predictability of corporate and airline flying to start my own company was a leap into the unknown, but Lea’s encouragement and our mutual dream guided this journey. To anyone contemplating a similar leap, remember that the path to fulfilling your dreams is not a solo flight. With the right co-pilot and a shared vision, even the sky isn’t the limit. Starting Legacy Jets was not just about finding a new career path but about pursuing a passion and creating a legacy that Lea and I could be proud of. It stands as a beacon to others in corporate roles, a testament that it’s possible to chart a course to new horizons with courage, support, and a willingness to dream big.
someone who charted unknown territories in business. My first attempt got off to a strong start but after five years of business success and failed partnerships I realized I needed to build a new and stronger business without the burden of outside investors or partners. Armed with the business experience, operational knowledge, and the funds I needed to go entirely on my own Lea and I, now married, worked on the plan to kickstart Legacy Jets. Financing Legacy Jets required a combination of faith, commitment, and cash to get the company off the ground. It was a testament to our commitment, risking everything on a dream we thought could take flight. Building a clientele from scratch tested our resilience. We leveraged every contact we had. At the same time, our background in digital marketing became an unexpected asset, helping us to promote our new venture in ways traditional

The End of the Road and New Beginnings Discussing the “End of the Road World Tour,” Thayer reflected on the bittersweet nature of this farewell. “This tour was our way of saying thank you to the fans, of celebrating this incredible journey we’ve been on,” he said. The extended nature of the tour, due in part to the pandemic, gave the band a unique opportunity to connect with fans across the globe one last time. “It felt like the longest goodbye, but it was also a chance to really savor those moments, to give our fans the send-off they deserved.” Tommy Thayer’s story is a compelling narrative of rock and roll’s power to inspire, bring people together, and effect change. As he looks to the future, his legacy, like the music of KISS, will continue to resonate, reminding us of the profound impact one person can have on and off the stage.
A Generational Kiss Army:
The fan base, affectionately known as the KISS Army, is a phenomenon that spans generations, a fact that Thayer finds both humbling and exhilarating. “The diversity of our audience is incredible. You’ve got the lifelong fans who’ve been with us from the beginning, and then you’ve got the younger generation discovering our music for the first time. It’s a testament to the universal power of rock ‘n’ roll,” Thayer explained. This multigenerational appeal has sustained KISS’s relevance and fostered a vibrant community around its music and performances. “Seeing fans of all ages at our shows, singing along, it’s a reminder of why we do what we do,” he added.

The narrative of Tommy Thayer is a testament to the enduring influence of rock ‘n’ roll — its capacity to unite, inspire, and drive positive change in the world. His active role in the Thayer Family Foundation is a direct homage to his father’s enduring legacy of service, specifically aimed at supporting veterans and their families. Elevate Your Home: 7 Tips to Transition into a Tranquil Haven
By Lea Woodford
R emodeling your home is more than a project; it’s a journey of reimagining your living space to reflect your style, dreams, and the narrative of your home’s architectural heritage. It’s about striking a delicate balance between the cherished memories of the past and the vibrant possibilities of the future. This endeavor requires a blend of creativity, practicality, and foresight—a dance between honoring tradition and embracing innovation. Imagine stepping into your home after a thoughtful remodel and feeling joy and belonging, knowing every choice. Are you looking to transform your home? Remodeling your living space is more than just a project; it’s an adventure. It’s an opportunity to reimagine your living space to reflect your personality, values, and style. A successful remodel requires a blend of creativity, practicality, and foresight. In this guide, we offer seven spirited and insightful tips to ensure your home’s remodel truly expresses your unique vision and the timeless beauty of your abode.
1. Honor Your Home’s Architectural Integrity Your home’s architectural heritage is an essential aspect of its character. To truly honor your home’s architectural integrity, you must understand its history, origins, and the era it represents. Investigating its historical context will allow you to make informed decisions that pay homage to its roots. Consider curating a museum where each piece contributes to a coherent narrative rather than clashing or drowning in a sea of mismatched eras. Integrating modern amenities without compromising the home’s character is the goal. For example, choosing fixtures and furnishings that echo the handcrafted aesthetic in a Craftsman-style home can bridge centuries. It’s about creating a dialogue between the old and the new, where each enriches the other, offering a house that’s as functional as historically resonant.
2. Ride the Trend Wave (But Don’t Get Swept Away): A Balancing Act While keeping an eye on contemporary trends, anchor your design choices in elements that transcend the fleeting whims of fashion. Consider incorporating trendy colors or patterns through easily changeable items like wall paint, throw pillows or artwork. This approach allows you to refresh your home’s look without committing to major renovations every few years. Moreover, embracing trends can be done thoughtfully by selecting
those with staying power or cyclical appeal. For instance,
mid-century modern design has seen a resurgence but is rooted in principles of simplicity and functionality, making it a safer bet than more ephemeral trends. By selecting elements that have shown endurance, you can ensure your home feels current yet timeless.

add immeasurable beauty and durability to your home. These elements become the backbone of your design, showcasing your commitment to excellence and providing a solid foundation for your décor choices. 5. Future-Proof Your Castle: Designing for Tomorrow As you dream up your perfect home, spare a thought for the you of tomorrow. Life is unpredictable, and your home should be a sanctuary that adapts to your evolving needs. Incorporating versatile design elements, such as modular furniture or adjustable lighting, can ensure your home remains comfortable and functional through various life stages. space tells a unified story, with each piece contributing to the aesthetic narrative. 4. Choose Quality Over Quantity, Every Time: An Investment in Timelessness In the world of home remodeling, quality should always trump quantity. This philosophy applies not only to materials but also to the space itself. Rather than cramming every latest gadget into your kitchen remodel, focus on a few high-quality appliances with longevity and performance. This less-is-more approach elevates the design and ensures your home remains functional and stylish for years to come. Investing in craftsmanship, especially in built-in features like cabinetry or staircases, can
3. Marry the Old with the New in Perfect Harmony: A Symphony of Design Achieving harmony between old and new elements in your home is akin to orchestrating a symphony where every instrument has a role, contributing to a beautiful collective sound. This requires a keen sense of balance and proportion. For example, pairing an antique dining table with contemporary chairs can create an intriguing focal point, marrying the warmth of the past with the clean lines of the present. To ensure this blend feels intentional rather than haphazard, maintain a common thread throughout the design—color, material, or style—that ties disparate elements together. This cohesive approach ensures your

your living experience. Smart home features, for example, offer convenience and efficiency, while thoughtful layout planning can accommodate future mobility needs. By anticipating these changes, your remodel can serve you well into the future, making it a true forever home. 6. Let There Be Light (and Lots of It): Illuminating Your Space Light has the power to transform a space. It can make a room feel larger, warmer, and more inviting. Incorporating natural light into your design is ideal but only sometimes practical. Incorporating well-selected artificial lighting to complement natural light can turn any area into a warm and welcoming retreat. Consider their functionality, aesthetics, and energy efficiency
when choosing light fixtures. Lighting should be layered, combining ambient, task, and accent lighting. This approach creates a dynamic and versatile space that can adapt to different moods and needs. 7. Invest in a Professional Contractor A successful remodel requires

Ken Wilson: Crafting an Empire from Sun, Sand, and Sunglasses
“Losing everything was my rite of passage, it stripped away all illusions and left me with nothing but the will to succeed.”
I n the high-octane world of entrepreneurial battles, few stories are as rich and textured as those of Ken Wilson, the founder of Gatorz, Liquid, and now Fast Metal. From dreaming of motorcycle races in the
quaint setting of Kentucky to taking on industry giants, Ken’s journey encapsulates the quintessential American Dream—an intoxicating mixture of ambition, grit, and relentless innovation.
Kentucky Dreams to California Realities Ken’s saga begins in a small Kentucky town, where the young dreamer spent his days envisioning a life racing

motorcycles on the sunny expanses of California. This wasn’t just a fleeting fantasy but a beacon guiding his ambitions. “Growing up, all I could do was sit around and dream about racing,” Ken reminisces. “I had no way of getting to California, no support—just a head full of dreams and a heart full of drive.” In 1986, with nothing but a van and a vision, Ken made the pivotal drive to San Diego. The reality was harsher than he expected. Soon after his arrival, his van was repossessed,
and he lost his job. This could have broken anyone, but for Ken, it was the soil where his entrepreneurial seeds were sown. “Losing everything was my rite of passage,” he explains. “It stripped away all illusions and left me with nothing but the will to succeed.” The Incidental Entrepreneur Ken’s foray into the sunglasses business was a stroke of serendipity. While working in the backrooms of a motorcycle apparel company, he overheard
his boss discussing the potential of expanding into sunglasses. The industry was still in its infancy, making just a million a year. Recognizing the opportunity, Ken decided to plunge into the sunglasses business. Ken’s first venture, Biff Malibu, was a brand that embodied the laid-back, surfer cool of Malibu. However, a chance encounter with an investor friend, a passionate fan of the Florida Gators, led to a significant shift in Ken’s business direction. Inspired by his friend’s

enthusiasm, Ken rebranded his venture as Gatorz. “We decided to ditch Biff Malibu for Gatorz,” Ken explains. “It was a more marketable name and tapped into a deeper cultural vein.” This strategic pivot marked a new chapter in Ken’s entrepreneurial journey. Battles with Giants Gatorz’ ascent caught the attention of a prominent eyewear company, marking the start of a series of legal challenges that would test Ken’s
mettle. “Here I was, a 22-year- old kid, taking on this giant because I was too dumb to know any better,” Ken says with a laugh. “But sometimes, it’s that ignorance of youth that pushes you to take risks that pay off.” The legal battles were grueling, involving everything from personal attacks to intense courtroom dramas. The opposing company’s tactics were relentless, but Ken’s resolve was firmer. “They dragged my ex-girlfriend into court to intimidate me. It was surreal, watching the owner
of the rival company cozy up to her right there in front of me,” Ken recounts. Despite these challenges, Ken’s spirit remained unbroken, and Gatorz thrived. Innovation and Expansion As Gatorz stabilized, Ken felt the itch to innovate further. Fast Metal was born out of a desire to fuse high-quality lens technology with durable frames—a nod to both style and substance. “When I started Fast Metal, I focused on the lens

technology. That was where the future was at,” Ken asserts. Introducing the Tanzania Gray lens was a game-changer, particularly among pilots who praised its clarity and quality. Gatorz’s rise was meteoric, but it wasn’t without setbacks. Another round of legal challenges ensued, this time more intense than before. But Ken’s earlier battles had prepared him well. “By then, I knew the drill. You stand firm, you fight smart, and sometimes, you must be stubborn enough to keep going,” he advises. Selling Fast Metal and Looking Ahead Ken has founded three sunglasses companies. He started Gatorz in 1988 after ditching BiF Malibu, then Ieft Gatorz in August 2000 to Start Liquid Icon, Inc. He later sold Liquid Icon, Inc. to a Japanese investor in 2014. He is currently at the helm of Fast Metal, which he started in 2018. Legacy and Final Thoughts Ken Wilson’s entrepreneurial journey is more than a business case study; it’s a testament to the power of resilience and vision. From floating checks to fund his first batch of sunglasses to taking on legal giants, his story is a beacon for aspiring entrepreneurs everywhere. “Never underestimate the power of ignorance combined with determination,” Ken shares as a closing thought. “Sometimes not knowing how hard something will be is exactly why you succeed.” Ken’s legacy is not just in the companies he built but in the sheer force of his will to turn dreams into tangible successes, proving time and again that with enough grit, even the loftiest dreams can be within reach. Ken has also had the opportunity to meet and work with a number of celebrities over the years.
