urer. To date, over twenty men have confessed Christ in the Main Street hall. Many are praying that this work may eventually result in another such “fish pond” as the Biola Hall used to be. Ü Invited to Return I or the third time in the last two years, Dr. Isaac P. Ward, one of thè Institute’s field representatives, has been invited to hold meetings in the Evangel ical Church of Porterville, Calif. He has just completed a campaign there, the re sults o f which, have been most gratifying. One o f the local papers made this re mark : “ One o f the interesting features o f the campaign is the steady, constructive work that is being carried on by the pastor, Rev. Philip Thomas, and Dr. Ward in their personal contacts in which they are using the most practical methods.” Dr. Ward, by the liberal employment of sanctified common sense, has formed valuable friendships for the Institute among the pastors and business men of Porterville. In March, he conducted meetings at the Church o f the United Brethren in Christ, at Modesto, Calif. Adolph Kurkowske, ’24, is the pastor there, and he is ably assisted by his wife, formerly Miss Anna Cedarlund. Renewed Fellowship splendid idea has been advanced by Mr. J. P. Welles, Manager of the Field Department, and for twenty years
“ Bring me that cart you wheel people around on. I must get to that woman be fore it is too late.” They told her she was too ill to move, but she insisted until, rather than let her work herself into a fever, they finally consented to take her to the woman, and she had the joy of bringing her first soul to the Lord, only a few minutes before that one slipped into eternity. Business Men at Biola i usiness men who love the Lord •have banded themselves together to do business for Him. These men have been meeting every Thursday noon for luncheon in one o f the Institute’s private dining rooms. A good forty-cent lunch, introductions without speeches, short testimonies, and a ten-minute talk by an invited guest take up the hour. This is a great place for Christian business men to bring their friends whom they wish to acquaint with the Lord Jesus Christ. The visitors see at once what a good time God’s people have when they assemble. A vital part o f this undertaking is the renting of a hall on a principle thorough fare o f the city, where gospel literature may be obtained, and where there will always be some one on hand to lead en quirers to the Lord. God laid this work upon the heart o f Mr. George Hummel, :of the Hummel Brothers Employment iAgency in Los Angeles. Associated; With him are Mr. W . G. Nymafty&rid Mr. O. O. Purcell. The latter acts as secretary and treas- What the World Needs, Is Jesus.
Suppose O ' uppose that while you were a student p l at dear old Biola, you were one day called to the office and told that you were fifty dollars in arrears for room and board, and that, unless the amount was paid, you could not be allowed to continue at the Institute, Then suppose that the very day on which you were to leave, there came a knock at your door, and when you re sponded you saw a fellow student who said something like this: “ Say, Joe, I heard about your having to leave school. I know it’s been a hard year for getting your kind o f w ork ; so I prayed about it, and here’s $52.00 that the boys here in the dormitory gave me to give you. W e don’t want to see you go, Joe. So long —see you in the dining room.” What would you say? How would you feel? Well, that is the kind o f student body we have at the Bible Institute of Los Angeles, during these days of financial difficulty, for this incident actually took place a few days ago. ( very former student of the Institute is acquainted with the work of the Lyceum Club, that great organization for young«women, which meets at the Insti tute every Tuesday evening for supper, for fellowship, and for the study of the Word. From Miss Myrtle E. Scott, director o f the club, comes this unusual story. A young woman dropped info a church service one evening. She had made all What if the Lyceum Girl Had Failed ?
one of, the Institute’s most valued employees. The idea evolved in this w ay:: Several m o n t h s ago, the Lord brought to gether at Biola three fine missionaries, former stu dents o f the Institute. M f. Welles arranged a luncheon for them and their classmates. Then the thought came, “Why not have class dinners every two weeks throughout the school year ?” Mr. Welles’ suggestion has been put into opera tion, with blessed results. The plan is for the guests to arrive on a Friday eve ning, as near five o’clock as possible. There fol, lows a time of fellowship in the Fishermen’s Club R o o m . preparations to ‘.‘take the veil” in a Catholic con vent the following week. But that night, a, Lyceum girl talked with her and led her to accept the Lord as her Saviour. She came out definitely for the Lord and had a radiant and fearless testimony. Shortly after her con version, she underwent a serious operation. While in the hospital, the priest came to remonstrate with her for turning from the faith, telling her she would die if she did not repent, but he stayed to hear her read the Word and explain to him the way o f salvation through Christ Jesus. One day while still very ill, this y o u n g Christian heard of a woman in the hospital who was dying without Christ. She asked, “ Is there no one here who can tell her how to be saved?” The nurse knew o f no one, so the girl said,
