THE STORY OF THE GREAT KING B y H elen H owarth L emmel
efore H e went to Calvary, the Lord Jesus spoke much to His disciples o f the Third Person o f Elohim—the Holy Spirit—of whom we have heard but little, except His name. Jesus said that He Himself would soon return to the King dom o f Marvelous Light, but that in His place would come the Holy Spirit, to all who believed in Him everywhere. And He would never leave them. More than that, He would be in them. And that is how hearts are changed. When the Holy Spirit comes in, He drives out the old spirit, and makes the heart clean from the sin that entered through Satan in the Garden o f Eden. He will make a new creature of all who accept Jesus as the True Prince and Redeemer—a creature more splendid than Lucifer was, a creature more splendid than Adam was, because that new creature will be like the Lord Jesus Himself, some day, and share with Him all that He has. And He has all things! The blessed Holy Spirit, Jesus said, would help and comfort the disciples. He would teach them many things that they could not learn until He—Jesus—had gone. “He will bring continually to your re membrance all the things that I have said and done, so that nothing shall be forgot ten,” Jesus said. And the disciples were glad. Is it not wonderful to know that every thought we have of Jesus is given to us by the Holy Spirit? W e see clearly now why Elohim needed to be Three Persons in order to do what He had to do. God the Father gave the Son ; God the Son gave His l i f e; and God the Holy Spirit gives Himself to teach and guide the people of the Kingdom of Marvelous Light, while on earth. And this great giving is because God so loved the world. * * * One day, the risen Lord Jesus took His disciples to the top o f the Mount o f Olives, which is just outside Jerusa lem. And there again He told them strange and wonderful things. He did not need to tell them how He loved them, for He had proven that. Now they were to prove their love for Him, by their love for the world that He had died to redeem. Before the world could know of Him and ‘the redemption, there must be those who would make it known. And for that, Jesus said, He had chosen them! “ Go ye into all the world,” He said, “and tell this good news to every creature. And lo, I am with you always, even unto the end o f the age.” And the disciples did as Jesus bade them, for that is how you and I know it. And like the disciples, because we know, we must tell others. * * * As He was speaking, His feet left the ground, and He went up into the skies. A cloud hid Him from their sight, but still they gazed. They remembered His prom ise about the Holy Spirit, and they were comforted. Still they looked, as if to see through the cloud that covered Him. Nor did they know that an angel stood with them until he spoke. “Why stand ye gazing into the heavens ?” he said. Did he wish them at once to go down and begin to tell the good news? “ This same Jesus whom ye have seen go, shall come back again in like manner as ye have seen Him go.”
They remembered that He had said many times that He would return. And He will, even to that very place on the Mount o f Olives. His first message was to remind them o f that. And He had just gone! It must have meant much to Him that they should remember it. And we will remember, too. For when He comes, Satan and sin and death will be put away at last, forever. He came the first time as a lowly, helpless Babe. But when He comes again, it will be in great power and majesty and splendor. He will be the only Ruler o f the world, which will again be as it was in the beginning. And those who have chosen Him on earth will share His power and majesty and splendor. They shall reign with Him, the Son o f God, the True Prince who is Jesus, the Babe of Bethlehem; Jesus, the Boy of Nazareth; Jesus, the Man of, Galilee; Jesus, the cru cified of Calvary; Jesus, the risen Christ o f the garden tomb; Jesus, the ascended and coming Lord! When He comes, the dead who have chosen Him will rise from their graves, wherever they are, no matter how they died. As Jairus’ daughter, when He called her, so they will answer. When He comes, those who are alive will go to Him in the air, from whence He will call them. Mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers—all who love each other and have been separated, will—be cause they are His —meet each other there with Him. And all will then go with Him, to be forever with Him in the Kingdom o f Marvelous Light; all who have loved and believed in Him. * * * While the men stood on the Mount of Olives gazing after Him, the gates of the Kingdom of Marvelous Light were open ing to let Him in. What joy there was in the Kingdom that day, for the True Prince was returning V IC TO R IOU S ! He had done what He had to do. “L ift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King o f glory shall come in. “Who is this king o f glory? The Lord strong and mighty . . . he is the king o f glory.” Myriads o f shining ones circle around Him as the everlasting doors swing wide to receive Him. Their glorious wings sweep the heavenly spaces. The song they sing is of glory and honor and praise and power. And it is to Him, the King of Glory, and Redeemer o f the world.
