ed by His example, in the moment o f trial, faith falters and nature yields. And their walk can but issue where Peter’s did—in shame and bitterness o f tears. “ Yes, Lord! the place o f safety is nearest to Thyself.” — C aroline F ry . “ So shall my walk be close with God, Calm and serene my frame, A purer light shall mark the road That leads me to the Lamb.” M AY 26 How to L ive “ Christ the power o f God, and the wis dom of God” (1 Cor. 1 :24). Our highest lesson is to learn how to live on Him who was made of God unto us wisdom; and he who relies most upon Him for that wisdom will certainly be the wisest. His prophetical office is to teach us how to be always safe by believing in Him, and happy by living upon Him. He sends the Spirit into the believer’s heart to be always preaching this most comfortable doctrine, that, whatever he wants for his acceptance at the bar of justice, it is per fectly to be had, and freely, in the Lord Christ ; sins as red as scarlet, sins as nu merous as the stars, or as the sands upon the seashore innumerable, and nature as black as hell, the divine and precious blood of Jesus can so cleanse and purify that not one spot shall remain. On our learning this lesson depends our comfort able walk heavenward, for Christ does not give us a stock o f grace and expect us to improve it by being faithful to grace given; no, no, that is not His way. Our souls must depend upon Him, as our bo dies do upon the elements of this world. Every moment, we must live by faith upon His fullness, and every moment be receiv ing out of it grace for grace. —W . R omaine . M AY 27 Two W ays “ Our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father . , . stablish you in every good word and work” (2 Thess. 2:17). There are two ways o f going to work in regard to earthly good. One is the way o f struggling and toiling, pushing and snatching, fighting and envying, and that way comes to no successful issue; for if it gets what it has wriggled and wrestled for, it generally gets in some way or other an incapacity to enjoy the good won, which makes it far less than the good pursued. The other way is the way of looking to God and doing the appointed task with quiet dependence on Him, and that way always succeeds; for with its modest or large outward results, there is given like wise a quiet heart set on. God, and there fore capable of finding water in the desert and extracting honey from the rock. — A lexander M aclaren . "In the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up” (Psa. 5 :3). Let us look up often in prayerful anti cipation o f our Lord’s return. W e must Took down around at the things o f earth daily, but let our daily practice be the cul tivation of that upward gaze which seeks those things that are above; for, as Dr. Maclaren says, “ If it were not for the heavenward look, how could we bear the sight o f earth?” This heavenward look is the source, secret, and support o f all true work for God. While our hands are occu pied with the task of helping others, we must turn our eyes to heaven. The worker who looks up is the one who speaks the word with power.— A . W . P arsons . “ We will not hide them from their chil dren, shewing to the generation to come the praises o f the Lord" (Psa. 78:4). Our yesterdays are to be the teachers of our children. W e are to take them over our road, and show them the pitfalls where we stumbled and the snares that lured us away. And we are to show them how we found the springs o f grace and how the Lord made Himself known to us in daily providence and care. W e are to relate His exploits, “ His wonderful dealings with thè children of men.” . . . The best inheritance I can give my child is a steadfast witness o f my knowledge of God. The testimony o f a light that never failed may give him the needful wisdom when his own way becomes troubled with clouds and darkness. And what a Story it is, this story o f the deeds o f our gracious God! It is full o f quickening for weary and desponding souls. It is a perfect re servoir o f inspiration for those whose de sire has failed, and in whose lives the wells o f impulse have become dry. Let us bring forward yesterday’s wealth to enrich the life of today. “Do ye not remember the miracle o f the loaves?”—J. H. J owett . M AY 31 W e A ll N eed C hrist “Philip . . . preached unto him Jesus” (Acts 8:35). I read of a minister traveling in the South who obtained permission to preach in the local jail. A son o f his host went with him. On the way back, the young man, who was not a Christian, said to the minister: “ I hope some of the convicts were im pressed. Such a sermon as that ought to do them good.” “Did it do you good?” the minister asked. “ Oh, you were preaching to the con victs !” the young man answered. The minister shook his head and said: “I preached Christ, and you need him as much as they.”—D. L.
