tience; beside Abraham, and learn his faith; beside Daniel, and learn his cour age to do right; beside Isaiah, and learn his fiery indignation toward the evildoer; beside Paul, and catch something o f his enthusiasm; beside Christ, and you feel His love.—C. H. S purgeon . “ I cannot grasp the fullness, Lord, of this Thy word to m e; I have no line to sound the depth of love’s unfathomed sea; Yet fain would I let down my net, and be full-filled by Thee.” JUNE 11 I nstructed by the W ord "And the iron did swim" (2 Ki. 6:6 ). This incident belongs to a sphere en tered only by “men of God”-—by men who know God and walk with Him, as did Eli jah and Elisha. The natural man looks everywhere for the reign of natural law, and would leave the axe head at the bot tom of the Jordan in the grip o f gravita tion ; but, “the man of God” expects and finds everywhere the strong gracious sway o f his God. Oh, that men, instead o f pre suming to sit in judgment upon the W ord o f God, would allow themselves to be judged and instructed by it! This Scrip ture, like all others, is quick and powerful, and is a discerner o f the thoughts o f the heart. It is one o f the very wonderful things about the Bible that it is the only book in the world which gives evidence o f having taken the true measure of our need o f God. . . . However strange or uncalcu lated the position in which we find our selves, it cheerily provides us with just that revelation o f God which begets as surance that our need has been accurately anticipated and amply provided for. And so, as we stand by the river in whose wa ters lies lost the head o f the borrowed axe, we do not lightly esteem the assur ance that even there our God is present to share our care and hear our prayer. —C. G. M oore . JUNE 12 W hen L ove is T ested "I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you” (Matt. 5:44). There is no life o f righteousness pos sible in this world that will save one from false accusation. John the Baptist was be headed, Jesus was crucified, Stephen was stoned to death, Paul was beheaded, and thousands o f saints have been hunted and butchered. But you can love your enemies. You can be a faithful and glad witness for the Lord Jesus in His regenerating, sanctifying, and keeping power. You can have a great patience, and an undaunted courage. You can stand unafraid among men and devils, and contend for the faith that saves, and in the midst o f it all you can be kept from any sort of unholy anger, courteous qnd obliging to those who are opposing and using you wickedly. —H. C. M orrison .

“ Thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it" (Isa, 30:21). The narrow way may always be recog nized by these two beautiful tokens: for giveness o f sins and holiness of heart and life. These remain the same all the way through, yet always- beautiful; “new and -living” through the daily sprinkling of the atoning blood and the daily quickening o f the Holy Spirit. Another element of beauty in this new grace is found in its being a way, and not a mere enclosure, however pleasant and safe. It is an open path, quite open as far as you can run, and as far as you can see, and even beautifully narrow, for it is open all through to the other end. —M oody S tuart . W e Work but Do W e Love? O ne cannot go far in the life and teach ings o f Jesus without realizing that at the heart o f things, is a loving Heavenly Father, who yearns over and cares for His children. It was because of this love that He sent His Son to be our Lord and Saviour. Divine love took the initiative in redeeming the w orld : “God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself.” Love was uppermost in the life of Jesus. He hated hypocrisy and insincerity and sin, but He loved men. His heart was moved with compassion when He saw the suffering multitudes. He inaugurated the new king dom on a basis o f love. “ Love God su premely,” said He, “and your neighbor as yourself, for on this hang the law and the prophets.” Love was to be the motive back o f all service both to God and to humanity. Paul had this spirit when he wrote: “ For the love o f Christ constrain- eth us.” Christ’s love for a lost world is the power that urges us forward in bring ing the lost to His feet. Is love central in our service today? Or is it duty,” or a quota, or a budget? These are useful, pro vided they serve as a means o f constraining love, which must ever be central in Chris-; tianity.— W a tchm an -E xam iner .

Fear not! God is thy shield, And He thy great reward; His might has won the field: Thy strength is in the Lord! Fear notl for God has heard The cry of thy distress; The water of His word Thy fainting soul shall bless.
