bind prisoners. You will notice that he has a black heart, showing that he is not a Christian. These two spools with white hearts remind us of Paul and Silas who were put in the Philippian jail. We will put these spools on the black cords to remind us of the way Paul and Silas were imprisoned. (Place one spool on each side of the first one, and tie a knot at the ends of the black cords.) At midnight, while Paul and Silas were singing praise to God, a great earthquake took place, which opened the prison doors. The jailer was afraid and wanted to know what he had to do to be saved. Paul said, “ Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved” (Acts 16:31). (Place the red cloth over the spools. A slit in the cloth will allow the knot to pass through, into view, showing that it is not untied. Remove the black heart under the cloth. Slip the center spool toward one side, allow ing the cord to be unlooped, and the spools will fall to the floor. With the hands under the cloth, shift the loops so that you show a complete circle of the two parallel cords. The cords are neither untied nor cut, and still the spools are free.) This red cloth reminds us of the blood of Christ. Paul could say what he did because Jesus had come to seek and save the lost. Believing on the Lord Jesus Christ, the jailer lost his black heart and received a white heart like those of Paul and Silas. December 21, 1947 GOD’S GIFT Objects: A large six-pointed silver star, made of silver paper. (Cut the let ters C-H-R-I-S-T from the paper and paste one on each of the points of the star. In the middle of the star paste a red cross. Fold each point forward where it joins the body of the star. Stick the points together with trans parent tape when they meet. When all points are folded and fastened to gether, the appearance will be that of a hexagonal pyramid. The letters and cross will be on the inside. Tie with a silver ribbon to give the appearance of a gift package.) Lesson: Did you ever look at a Christ mas package and try to figure out by its shape and size what it contained? Yes, I think we all have. Try to guess what this package has in it. Now I will untie the ribbon and show you what the package contains. “Just a silver star.”

troubles to make our life sweeter, if we will let Him do it. This sweet pickle reminds us of John when he wrote the epistle of III John. He said: “ Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth. For I rejoiced greatly, when the breth ren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth” (III John 2, 3). December 14, 1947 A PRISONER WHO PREACHED Objects: Three spools, two pieces of soft black cord about a yard long, and a piece of red cloth. (Before the lesson, take one of the black cords, fold it in the middle, and push through one of the spools. When the fold extends through the spool a short distance, fold the

December 7, 1947 COUSINS AND CUCUMBERS Objects: Two cucumber pickles, one sweet and one sour. Lesson: How many of you boys and girls have cousins? Here are two cous ins—the Cucumber Cousins. The fat one is Clara, and the slim one Carrie. They are really quite different. You cannot always tell the nature of a person by looking at him; you often need to get acquainted with him before you know very much about him. The best way to get acquainted with a cucumber pickle is to taste it. (Give .to one pupil.) Is it sweet or sour? “ Sweet.” Clara is a sweet pickle. Let’s taste the other pickle and see what kind it is. “ Sour!” Yes, Carrie is a sour pickle. These two pickles remind me of Christian peo ple. Some are sweet and some are sour. Something made Carrie sour and some thing made Clara sweet. Many times God lets Christians meet hard trials such as illness, loss of money, or un kindness from other people. When Christians let these things make them sour, they fail to please Christ, and they make those around them unhappy, too. But the Lord Jesus is ready to use these

other cord, and push the folded tip of the loop through the loop of the first cord about half an inch. Then pull the first cord back into the spool, bring ing the second cord with it, concealing the bent tip of the second loop. The cords should be large enough to fit the holes in the spool snugly. Paste a white paper heart on this spool, and cover with a slightly larger black heart, pasted lightly around the edges. Put white paper hearts on the other spools.) Lesson: Here is the Philippian jailer, carrying his black cords with which to
