MAYOR’S MESSAGE

As we begin a new season of recreation programs, there’s much to celebrate. I’m pleased to announce that aquatics programming at the Tillsonburg Community Centre is back! While renovating the indoor pool to be more accessible has required more patience than anticipated, it’s exciting to be at the finish line and recognize this milestone with the community. Speaking of milestones, did you know 2025 is the 200th anniversary of George Tillson establishing Dereham Forge, the settlement that would later become Tillsonburg? You can learn more at Annandale National Historic Site—and at the Founders Festival coming this October. Remember, you can stay up to date by using the Town of Tillsonburg app. Get news, program updates, service alerts and more delivered right to your mobile phone.

What to know before you go... ACCESSIBILITY AT THE INDOOR POOL

What has changed?

Where should I park?

We’ve updated the indoor pool to be more accessible and inclusive.

At the South Entrance, you’ll find a new exterior ramp. If you enter by this door, it’s only a short walk to the universal change rooms. Accessible parking spaces are located across from the pickleball courts. At the East Entrance (near outdoor rink), you’ll need to use an elevator to access the new universal change rooms. At the North Entrance, there are a number of accessible parking spots located on the street. If you park here, you’ll need to use an exterior ramp to enter the building, as well as an interior ramp to the upper lobby and elevator.

• New lobby and accessible entrance • New ramp entry to the pool with submersible wheelchair • New elevator • New barrier-free accessible viewing area • Upgrades to mens and womens change rooms • New universal change rooms

Who can use the universal change rooms?

Universal change rooms may be used by people of any gender, but are designed with caregiving and accessibility needs in mind. While universal change rooms are inclusive space, please note that changing in or out of a swimsuit should only be done in the dedicated changing cubicles. Nudity and undergarments are not acceptable in open areas.

What is a universal change room?

Our universal change rooms have spacious showers, private changing cubicles, private washroom stalls, day- use lockers and change tables.

*Individuals with serious medical conditions should be accompanied by an individual 12+ years of age who is knowledgeable of their condition and will be responsible for direct supervision.

Pool Admission Standards and Wristband Policy

We use wristbands and a facility swim test to identify young and at-risk swimmers in the pool. To pass the facility swim test, a child must be able to swim two widths of the pool with their face in the water. Swimmers must maintain a regular, comfortable breathing pattern and must not stop during the entire distance.

Red Band All children 5 & under MUST be within arm’s reach of a responsible guardian (12 years+) on a 1:2 ratio. Children ages 6-9 who cannot pass the swim test MUST be within arm’s reach of a responsible guardian (12 years+) on a 1:4 ratio. This ratio can be increased to 1:8 if lifejackets are worn.

Yellow Band Children (6-9 years) will receive a yellow band if they would like to attempt to pass the facility swim test. Results of the test will determine whether the child receives a Red or Green band.

Green Band Children (6-9 years) who pass the Swim Admission Test may swim unaccompanied. Children with green bands may be asked to retake the test if staff are concerned that the child cannot demonstrate the ability to maintain the Swim Admission Standard.

Passed your swim test? Once you have successfully completed your swim test your account will be updated, letting staff know you passed. On your next visit, provide your name and information to staff and you’ll receive your green band.
