27th International symposium: Synthesis in organic chemistry

Gusev technology for the homogeneous hydrogenation of esters Dr. Stephen J. Roseblade, Dr. Damian M. Grainger, Dr. Antonio Zanotti-Gerosa Johnson Matthey, UK Ester hydrogenation is widely used in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, detergents, cosmetics, flavours and fragrances. [1] The Gusev catalysts are a homogeneous option for ester hydrogenation. [2] JM have an exclusive license to two homogeneous Ru catalysts for the reduction of esters to alcohols for application in fine chemicals and fatty alcohol synthesis. Key characteristics are: high chemo-selectivity for ester hydrogenation (eg. C=C retention)high activity (10,000 – 100,000/1) under basic conditionsmild conditions – low T (30 – 90C) and P (5 – 50 bar)The results of in-house R & D at JM will be presented showing examples which demonstrate the potential of this emerging and commercially relevant technology. At low enough catalyst loadings the cost contribution of this hydrogenation process becomes competitive with more traditional stoichiometric hydride reagents. Non-qualified advantages include reduced waste disposal costs, improved safety & sustainability and process simplification. [3] References 1. S. Werkmeister, K. Junge, M. Beller, Org. Process Res.
