As the health industry evolves, we are obligated to provide better access to quality health care and more determined than ever to meet the needs of our community. I am both grateful and thankful for the success that we have achieved throughout the last few months by opening the OGHS WellSmart Health Clinic on the campus of LSUE and the WellSmart Rural Health Clinic on our main campus. We now have the opportunity to service a much larger market. Please join me in congratulating our recent service award recipients. We are very fortunate to have the caliber of dedicated employees who contribute greatly to the success of our health system. I would also like to take this op- portunity to thank, you our medical staff, for your support and commitment as we continue on our journey to excellence. With the support of our employees and medical staff, I look forward to reaching many more accomplishments and celebrating future OGHS milestones.

Mr. Charles Going, a Senior member, founder and Certified Public Accountant, with Going, Sebastien, Fisher & Lebouef, LLP, Mr. Robert Wolfe, Jr., Civil Engineer and president of Morgan Goudeau & Associates and Dr. Kerry Thibodeaux, FACS, General and Vascular Surgeon and Certified Wound Specialist were all recently ap- pointed to serve on the OGHS Trust Authority Board of Trustees.

Healthcare is always in a constant state of change and so are we! Several weeks ago, Administration at the Main Campus underwent extensive water damage. The offices within this area have been relocated to the following locations until further notice. Where are you originally from? I’m originally from San Germán, Puerto Rico: the second oldest city in the new world (this hemisphere). Why did you choose OGHS? I chose Opelousas General Health System because it is a community-oriented hospital. This is where I always wanted to work. What is your favorite thing about working at OGHS? My favorite thing about working at OGHS is the people! The nursing staff really cares about their community and dedication to the care of the patients. What do you enjoy most about being a physician? The most rewarding part of being a physician is the smiles we get from the care that we give. What would you like everyone to know about you? I joined the medical staff of OGHS in February of 2000. We treat everyone like family. We truly live our mission of “our family caring for yours.” What do you like to do in your free time? I really like to cook! Outside or inside; on the BBQ. I’ve got five. My favorite dish is Spanion Paella.

TO: ALL MEDICAL STAFF MEMBERS FROM: SCOTT PARKS, MD – CHIEF OF STAFF SUBJECT: PRIORITY ADMISSION / TRANSFER CRITERIA FOR ICU / PCU DATE: MAY 16, 2019
Guidelines to determine the priority of transfer in or out of ICU and PCU were re-approved by the Medical Staff of Opelousas General Health System in September of 2018. According to the policy, a cumulative score is assigned to the patient based on his/her therapeutic regimen and system assessment. The patient is then classified into one of three categories -transferable, possible transfer if acute bed is needed, and not eligible for transfer. This assists in identifying which patients are eligible to move to another unit in the event that the unit is at maximum capacity. Should the need for an emergency admit arise, the patient’s primary care physician will be contacted for consultation regarding patient condition and ability to transfer to another unit. We appreciate your support and participation in this patient safety process.

Dr. Eliza Tate, recently spoke at the quarterly St. Landry Parish T.R.I.A.D. meeting in Port Barre about the importance of immunizations. Dr. Ty Hargroder was the guest speaker at the first annual Med Express senior event in Church Point on June 13th about diabetic foot care and sun-related skin injuries.
We are in the process of installing and validating our newest chemistry analyzers. Anticipated go live date is the end of September - mid October. We will be converting to a new high sensitivity troponin assay. This will provide physicians with results that can ultimately lead to a faster rule in/rule out of Myocardial Infarction, within one to three hours vs. three to six hours. FIRST IN ACADIANA AREA TO AQUIRE NEO-TEE DEVICE
The Neo-Tee resuscitation device has recently been acquired by OGHS to provide the most ad- vanced technology in delivering Continuous Posi- tive Airway Pressure (CPAP) and Positive Pressure Ventilation (PPV) to infants in need of breathing support post-delivery. The Neo-Tee is a single circuit disposable resuscitation device, which mitigates issues of infection control and provides a safer environment. It requires 100% oxygen or blended air and oxygen, is easy to set-up and control, and delivers safe breathing assistance to infants with precision. The Neo-Tee eliminates the possibility of delivering too much, or not enough support, which is common due to variability with the use of resuscitation bags. The Neo-Tee can be used with a resuscitation mask or fit directly on an endotracheal tube. Nursing and Respirato- ry staff, as well as our OGHS Pediatricians, were recently in-serviced and educated on the usage of this device. Dr. Gerard Ballanco was a guest speaker at the Opelousas Elderly Awareness Seminar on April 10th about Low Dose Lung CTs and Musculoskeletal Ultrasounds Dr. Andrew Sicard was a guest speaker at the Port Barre Elderly Luncheon on April 26th about Robotic General Surgery and the benefits for patients. Protonix IV Shortage – Due to a national shortage of Protonix injection, the pharmacy department is asking for your help in conserving our current stock. Please consider using the following alternatives: Protonix 40mg tablets if oral route is feasible Protonix 40mg granules for suspension if NG/OG/PEG tube required Pepcid 20mg IV twice daily if IV route is required This shortage is expected to last through July 2019. With the receipt of its Medicaid license, the Retail Pharmacy was able to utilize both service windows while simultaneously launching the Meds to Beds program resulting in a significant increase in prescriptions filled. For the month of May, the retail pharmacy filled 589 prescriptions. Of these, 436 were new fills with 153 refills. Meds to Beds advertising is expanding to additional floors and departments. WellSmart of LSUE is now open on the campus of LSUE for students, faculty and the community.
